Not answering the question but about 35% of admittees decline Yale’s offer. That’s the consistent number. This year it’ll be about 650 kids. Yep, that many.

Where? Lots of places. Other Ivies, LACs, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, Pomona, UT, UMich, non-US schools. You name it, it’s probably happened recently. Nothing earth shattering about this, though.

D is wait listed and smiles17 said it best “If you aren’t completely committed to yale, turn it down! you guessed it–i’m a waitlister!”

Just to keep things simple and not to go into the whys and why nots. Following are the simple answers I found in the thread that was closed. Are there any others turning down Yale for another school?

madrigal93 - Yeah, I think I’m going to turn it down. Not for another Ivy though, but for the University of Chicago.

59sound - I might turn it down for H or P. Slowly leaning away.

feathered - I’m very likely turning down Yale for LSM at Penn.

Basajaun - I might choose Harvard or Stanford over Yale…Brown was in the running until ADOCH but I had a horrible experience there.

nazmom - My d will turning down Yale for Pomona college.

alwaysstressed - dartmouth

mitigated - I’m turning down Yale for either UC Berkeley or Caltech (if admitted off the wait list)

HighHead - my D is probably going to turn town Yale, Stanford, and Brown for U Chicago (unless something major happens at Bulldog Days).

amomthathelps - My son is choosing Brown over Yale

TALEZL - My D might be turning down Yale for Stanford

Help me out as I’m very slow today, what is the point of this thread? Honestly, I don’t understand, what do the schools that students have chosen to attend over Y have to do with the current WL?

^I assume the OP is trying to estimate yield – the fewer kids who accept Yale’s offer, the more openings there may be for waitlisted kids. The problem with this approach is that CC is not an accurate gauge.

They seem to somehow feel better hearing that students are turning down Y. However, what’s baffling is that the info they list from the other thread is a different admissions cycle. T26E4 gave them the yield data, knowing the actual schools makes no difference at all. Oh well, another one of life’s mysteries ;).

I’m contemplating turning down Yale for a full merit scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It’s been tough deciding, so I guess I’ll just keep an open mind during Bulldog Days. Does anybody have an opinion / experience with this sort of situation? Any insight would be much appreciated.

This is Brown’s admitted students event and its equivalent of Bull Dog Days. If you have only heard raves about Brown then you haven’t spoken to enough students. Student satisfaction is indeed high in general but many cross-admits choose to go elsewhere and even current students are not always content. One of the seemingly best CC applicants I’ve ever seen went to Brown and applied the next year to go elsewhere.

I loved Yale and would go there again in a second. I looked at the Bull Dog Days program wishing I could be there myself. But I would never say I have heard ONLY raves about the place either.

cahsparent I think you are right it is an excercise in futility but I am also not quite sure why you are so insistent on keeping it to the one sentence “I am turning down Yale for…”

I find it interesting when people elaborate on their reasons why or make comments regarding a decision. And as long as they name the school then the question is answered! Sorry not trying to be argumentative but just really just wondering what is the intent, are you going to try to glean some sort of study out of the answers you get?
