Then I heard about the downward trend. This describes me pretty well. I've currently got a 3.78 GPA (weighted) and 32 ACT, pretty good extracurriculars, upwards of 300+ volunteer hours... thought I was set for Michigan (LSA, Engineering maybe but it would be a stretch). But I'm definitely displaying the downward trend:

Freshman year
1st Sem: 3.67
2nd Sem: 3.83

Soph year
1st Sem: 4.00
2nd Sem: 4.00

Junior year
1st Sem: 3.67
2nd Sem: 3.50

Add extra summer school classes (not any do-overs, just electives to get out the way) and there you have my GPA. So how badly did I mess up/can I still get into Michigan with early admissions (evaluate for both LSA and Engineering)?

Extra info-
Rank: 68/507
EC's: like I said, good; one varsity sport done all 4 years; multitudes of clubs; sunday school; 300+ hours of volunteering
Rigor of schedule: very rigorous; junior year was basically all APs but got mostly B's in those; however all 4's and 5's on the tests and by the time I graduate should have close to 11 tests completed all with credit (currently up to 6)
Standardized tests: like I said, 32 on ACT, planning to take SAT in fall, we'll see how that goes... overall good I guess but not great
Recs/essays: in the bag

So... what's my status? Good? Not great I know but then again hopefully not reach...

don’t worry too much YYZ. you’ve got really good stats so your chances of getting in are really high. your overall GPA and rank are really good and so are you SAT/ACT scores. just apply EA and you’ll have a better shot

You should be okay, I’d be surprised if you didn’t get in, especially if you apply this early. My High School didn’t send many kids to U of M, but those of us who got in all had very similar stats to yours, one kid who was much weaker than yourself (3.4 UW GPA, 26 ACT). Then again, our Salutatorian with a 4.0 and a 32 got denied, but he also applied later.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that you’re right in their range, but weird stuff can happen. Try and raise your class rank if you can, and best of luck!

As the unweighted GPA moves closer to a 3.5, U-M becomes a reach. Unweighted GPA is the most important factor. Course rigor second. Test score a distant third.
