.. papaya. i bought one last week - a whole 4lbs for $5.50. it was so amazing.

I imagined i was in rainforest and i had found it and i ate it like it was the most precious nourishment ever.

I sliced rings off it and nibbled on them.

like my ancestors i scooped out the seeds and used them to cook with (they are very edible and have a peppery flavor).

I guess i'll be off to pick another one up soon, once i finish annotating this paper :). I wish i could share it with you guys :).

I have never had one. Darn it. Now I want to have one and I’ll have to wait three more weeks ARRRRRGGGG

Lol this thread name scared me

yup, CA is the place to find them apparently. good luck jimbo :).

I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest papaya fan.

Mangoes on the other hand…

you reminded me of a few weeks ago when i bought a mexican mango for $.50 :p.

oddly the mexican mangoes are smaller than the normal mangoes, unlike how it is with the papayas. like the mexican papaya though the mexican mangoes are both cheaper and more yellow than the more common varieties.

it was probably buying that mango that gave me the encouragement to buy the papaya (i have eyed the papayas for a long time, but they always looked rather overipe and poorly treated).

anyway my story with the mango wasn’t nearly as happy. I had it while walking back from the store to my house, so i had to eat it from one hand, while my other hand carried the groceries. it dripped alot, the skin was bad tasting, and i think it was over ripe.

On the plus side it had a really slim seed, and i felt at least 10% like a wild person eating it the way i did, even if it was inconvenient.

I’m with dfree, mangoes all the way! Butttt, the yellowish orange ones you can generally only buy at hispanic markets are wayyy better than the greenish red ones!

Hooray for Mexican Mangoes, enfield!

^ oh that’s exactly what I had! i actually didn’t like it all too much. but i got it on a sale and there were only a few left - and they looked kind of wimpy.

I think i just had a bad selection.

Hmm, the ones I’ve gotten have always been really good. The peel’s an acquired taste, though. Rather, an aquired texture. =P They have a strange texture…

And the Mexican ones here are more expensive, and usually around the same size as the common ones. You probably did just get a bad one.

Oh yeah, those yellowish orange ones you can get at Asian supermarkets? Amazing. Their texture is like butter.

To clarify, I meant the peel’s got a weird texture, haha. They’re great, though…
