I Want My Imagination Shown On The Big Screen

Hi everyone,

I should've asked this earlier in my entrance to this site but I may as well ask it now.

I want to be a screenwriter, meaning that I write for the movies. It is an extremely tough field to get into and not a guaranteeed chance of success. If I want to be a screenwriter, what should my major be? i have a love for theater arts but I never took any acting classes in high school. I only started taking Improv class this summer and had a great time with it.

I want a major where I can easily get a good paying job in case I fail as a screenwriter, though I don't wish to fail lol. I was thinking along the line of an English major and Journalism or perhaps Communications. If so, what schools will be the best fit for me in this scenario.

Many of you know that I want to get into NYU, EMerson, UCLA but my scores aren't that high, so I'm pretty much looking at safetys or schools i can get into.

GPA: 4.5
SAT 1680/2400
Ranked: 3rd out of 31

1 girl in my class got a 1650/2400 but has a GPA of 4.8/4

And if I do not make it as a screenwriter, is there a chance the acting field would do for me and what would be the first steps in achivieing a good career. I don't even know how much the average writer gets paid lol.

Thank you !

Maybe I can become another Charlie Kaufman lol

i know a few people that have created their own major or double majored in Creative Writing/English and Film studies, so you may have more luck and/or greater options with that path

will double majoring in these two be extremely tough?

Go to a state school. Many of the large ones actually offer film degrees and you can minor in writing, or you could find a BFA theater program that has a screenwriting program.

I would be able to tell you more but I've erased all BFA knowledge from my mind because I decided that the BFA isn't the degree for me. I want a BA in theater doubled with a degree in business to fall back on.

most of the time doing a double major is no big deal, you just take your classes in those two areas.
you also might want to find a school that enthusiastically supports students who design their own majors
