I am currently a freshman at Cornell University but am not enjoying my time here nor do I feel like this is where I was meant to be. Don't get me wrong- I am so grateful to be at such a prestigious university, but this is not the school I originally planned to attend. After being rejected from my top choice, I chose between here, Duke, and UPENN. Basically, my mom "forced" me to attend Cornell, assuming that I'd enjoy it when I got here. But it has been 3 months and I feel the same way, if not worse, than I felt when I arrived. I don't click here and my grades serve as partial proof. But do you think my grades could be a great hinderance to being able to transfer to a similar university, like Brown, UPENN, etc.?

Fall 2013 (in progress)
Calculus 1: B
Spanish 2090: B
Writing Seminar: A
Human Development/Africana Studies: A
Overall GPA- 3.5

These are the worst grades I have ever gotten but I really believe that (besides the rigor), I struggle with feeling like I need to/should be here. It is so stressful to wake up every morning and wonder why the heck I'm here and try to feel motivated to do well. Do you think I'll be able to explain myself if I were to transfer or is my best bet to stay here?

Sounds like you have legit reasons for wanting to leave. Now find legit reasons for wanting to attend another university. if you can combine the two then I think you’ll have a good chance of getting into another school. At this point your HS grades will still be weighted in the decision process which should help you.

It is unclear what you would like to be moving toward, as opposed to what it is that you don’t like about Cornell. Is it too rural? Too large? Or are you just looking to improve the prestige factor? Your GPA is still very good, acknowledging the rigor of Cornell. Depending on your major, your best transfer option is Penn or Brown, or if you are willing to pick a LAC consider Oberlin or Wesleyan as they tend to take a great number of students compared with other top 25 LACs.

If your mom could manage to “force” you to go to Cornell, what makes you think that she will let you transfer out? You need to be talking with her about this, not us.

If you really truly want out as soon as possible, pick up the phone. Call the places that admitted you last year. Ask if there is any chance you could enroll there in the spring semester. Sometimes that is possible.
