I don’t have anyone I know in the medical field, I don’t really know what it takes to get started. So what are my chances of being able to start the road to a medical degree. I’m a sophomore in High School right now. I have a 3.3 right now but after this year ends il have a 3.0 hopefully…(This year was rough) Now if i get a 3.5 GPA my next to years il average to a 3.3 is that good enough? Im a A,B student so im just sorta guessing il get 3.5s. It that enough or do I need to find another interest?
You don’t go into medical school right out of high school. You first do 4 years of undergraduate studies during which you take a series of prerequisites required by medical schools. Your college GPA, your scores on the MCAT exam you take after your undergrad, and, to some degrree, pre-med related ECs, research/volunteer work – that’s what gets you into medical school.
Right now, focus on your grades, SAT preparation and taking as challenging a curriculum (especially in the sciences/math) as you can. That’s what will get you into college, and prepare you for college-level work. And that should be your primary goal right now.
Med schools don’t really care what you did in high school. They do care a lot about your grades in college. You have two more years to figure out what is going wrong. Once you start college you will be expected to get nearly all As, especially in the harder science classes.
Spend some time figuring out why you are getting Bs. Poor study habits, missing assignments, lack of attention, disorganization, etc? Fix this now.
If in two years your grades are better you will be in good shape to start college.
So my grades just need to be good enough to get into a collage to take the sciences and maths?
Yes. Try to go to a college where you can get high grades. Being a superstar at a less prestigious college would be better than going to a prestige school and getting mediocre grades.
@supchump Are you an international student?
If so, I hope you’re not planning on going to medical school in the US. American medical schools accept only a few international students each year. There is no financial aid, the costs can be $60,000/year and international students often must deposit the entire sum of their 4 years of medical school ($240,000) in a special account to prove they have the money to pay.
For international students, unless they’re very lucky and very rich, it makes no sense to plan getting their medical education in the US.
