I wouldn't call Purdue a safety but probably a match. Their average gpa is a 3.4 but your SAT is much higher.. you'll still want something for a sure thing. For the record, Purdue is ranked 60th by US News but the top 50 comment was more about your mentality.. it's pretty shallow to say that one's life is ruined because they won't get into the "right" college. I'm not trying to attack you personally or anything but I find it unbelieveable that so many people are obessessive about prestige.

His name is Indian, so I'm going to assume he is. Therefore what he's saying makes perfect sense. I know what he's thinking. But your scores are good, don't worry about it.

See the reasons I'm not applying to many reach schools is because of my lack of extracurriculars. According to most colleges, extracurriculars are very important; I would certainly have applied to other colleges if I had some. As for the out of state state schools, I'm applying because I've been looking at their chemical engineering program rankings; Purdue is around #10 in the nation, Ohio state is around 30, Rolla is around 60, and I think Illinois is #1. Is it a bad idea to choose a school based only on their ranking for their program?

And also, if I was an American, I wouldn't be so depressed. But since I am from India, everyone back home, and my parents, had high hopes for me since I came here pretty much when I was born, and since I've done nothing great it's depressing, since prestige is very important to my country and religion.

But why go to a CC when you can do way better than that?

Because I thought long term when I decided to get my degree. It's not like those of us who chose the CC route just threw up our arms and said, "Gee, I'm just going to get my AA and that's it, hyuk hyuk." No, we looked at all of our options, and decided that delaying our gratification was for the best. In other words, if I had gone straight from high school (3.7 GPA, 1390 dinosaur SAT), I might've gotten UCSD or UCLA/Cal. I had no hope for Ivies. When it came time to transfer though, (4.0 GPA), I was in at all the schools I really wanted (UCLA, Cal, some Ivies.)

Besides, even if I had gotten into UCLA as a freshman, I would've spent considerably more in the process. I saved money by transferring, and I actually got scholarships to pay for most of my education. Win/win, no?

I agree with UCLAri, a community college is not a deathwish at all and can really help you succeed later. I'm going to a CC as a high school student and the smartest guy I know is in one of my classes. CC was a transition step for him and I know he's going to make an excellent psychologist eventually. In this situation, a CC probably isn't the place for you but keep an open mind and quit bashing them guys, mmk?
