I've screwed up so much throughout my years in high school. I'm a senior now, and I've no direction in life. I realize I might have to even go to a community college now, but with that aside, can I even get any conformation that I might not have to go that route?

I had one pathetic ec.
Freshman year I had no advanced classes, no ecs, 2.46 gpa for the year.
Sophomore year I had no advanced classes, no ecs, 3.54 gpa for the year.
Junior year I had honors alg II, tennis, 3.75 gpa for the year.
Currently as a senior I'm taking ap chem, ap bio, ap lit, c++, precalc, no ecs, 4.33 gpa first semester, 4.83 second, hopefully.
My pathetic cumulative will be a 3.18 by the time I apply. If I wait until December, I would have a 3.4, and my 4.33 would show up.
My SAT's were nothing short of average. 2200
I guess I have decent essays, decent recs.

I've come to a realization that I've never applied myself correctly, and for this I know my life is ruined; I won't do the things I once dreamed of. The little ambition I have left is geared towards chemical engineering.. will I have any chance at some of these schools?

Purdue University
University of Missouri @ Rolla
University of Ohio
University of Cincinnati College of Engineering
University of Chicago @ Urbana Champane

The thing is, I'm from India and I'm a first generation student. I currently live in St. Louis, Missouri. My parents had high hopes for me, but I let them and myself down. Knowing this, I've started to try much harder now.. is it too late?

2200 on the SAT is average? That's at least over 700 in each area (give or take a few.) Man, if that's average, then I was dismal...

Well, your GPA hurts in a lot of cases. However, you showed improvement, which is good. I wouldn't say that you're 100% at any of the schools, but you have a good shot at most of them. How are the SAT IIs?

I love how much teenagers overreact about college. No man, your life isn't over, and everything isn't ruined. You just have to maybe walk a couple of extra roads to get there, but you can definitely get there. And don't discount community college as a bad way to go. I know doctors, lawyers, and PhDs who went to a CC first, and I wouldn't call them failures.

Your life is not ruined. With those SATs, you can already get into a decent four year college or university. You can also make the decision to go someplace for a year or two (or three semesters) and transfer. You have many options. I do not think that you belong at or will end up at a community college. Go to the best four year school that you are admitted to, and then evaluate whether to stay or transfer. Just be sure to keep up your grades, and look into transfer requirements and deadlines early. With your upward trend in grades, and great SAT scores, you could end up in a four year school that you like.

I don't see why community college is such a bad option, though. It's certainly not a limiting factor, if Indian is willing to put in the work needed to make it a good stepping stone.

People on this board have told me that Umich drops your freshman GPA. That would significantly increase your overall gpa in the eyes of one of the best engineering schools in the country.
I suggest you apply there. Based on the schools you listed, it isn't too far away either.

Yes, your life is absolutely ruined because you might not get in to a top 50 school and may have to go to -gasp!- community college! /end sarcasm. Sure, where you decide to go to college has a factor in how you'll end up later in life but it's much more important what you DO there. You also can always transfer. I don't understand this mentality that we all MUST go to the very best college to have a successful life. You should go where you're happy and where you'll fit in... this flipping out about going to the right college to get the right job is rampant on this board and it's driving me insane. Look up some schools online that will accept you, relax, and do well there.

Um.. Purdue is a top 50 school? If I went to a community college my self esteem would be blown, and my parents would absolutely hate me; there's no possiblity I will. I've realized there are people worse than me that get into the schools that I applied, mostly because some of them are state schools. But is it alright to say that Purdue is a safety?

I wouldn't call Purdue a safety but probably a match. Their average gpa is a 3.4 but your SAT is much higher.. you'll still want something for a sure thing. For the record, Purdue is ranked 60th by US News but the top 50 comment was more about your mentality.. it's pretty shallow to say that one's life is ruined because they won't get into the "right" college. I'm not trying to attack you personally or anything but I find it unbelieveable that so many people are obessessive about prestige.

these schools see that you are a slacker.. seem to be very smart.. although progressing by the years.. dont expect UC but does it matter if u have to transfer after 2 yrs at a cc? just do incredible at the cc and then tranfer to a great university

Are you people kidding me? A CC for someone with a 3.4 GPA and 2200 SAT??!@#@

Dude, if you live in Indiana you're getting into Purdue. If you don't, then you have an 90-95% chance of getting in. The colleges that you're posting up here are fairly GPA/SAT oriented. If you get a GPA within their avg Freshman GPA and a decent SAT then you'll get in.

Here's the thing though. Your SAT score is NOT decent. Your SAT score is EXCELLENT. A 3.4 GPA isn't terrible, and in reality, the fact that you have a huge upward trend is far better than having a consistently mediocre 3.4 avg throughout highschool. The bottomline is:

Thanks.. that's along the lines of what I started to think. However, I live in Missouri and I heard Purdue was nearly impossible for me.. what about some of the other schools?

Well, a 1/4 of Purdue's student body comes from out of state so I don't think that'll be that much of a problem.

As far as the others:

University of Missouri @ Rolla - You're basically a lock for this one.

The other universities you've listed are state universities. Personally, I think you need to look beyond those because they're (quite frankly) not worth it. You're not going to be able to justify paying the out-of-state tuition for the schools you've listed, because academically they're all around the same level or lower than University of Missouri.

Edit You might wanna think about applying to some reach/match top 30 schools. So far it seems your focus has been on public schools. If you're looking at out-of-state, private schools are the way to go. Here are some suggestions for reach schools:

Carnegie Mellon University - avg SAT 1375, avg gpa 3.6;
Tufts University - avg SAT around same as CMU. Avg gpa prolly the same.
University of Rochester- avg sat 1350, avg gpa 3.75
