I want to get a professional judgment but I have some difficulty

This could be part of the issue:

IRS finished 2021 filing season with backlog of 35 million tax returns that needed manual processing

Yeah, that part I already know. That’s what I told my school’s financial aid office when they asked for my paperwork for FA in the beginning. They needed a transcript back then but I didn’t have it due to the return not being processed. So, they gave me my FA and told me to disregard that request for the transcript.

You want to ask for professional judgment….because you hope to have increased need based financial aid for this academic year? Is that correct?

When I did my FAFSA for 22-23, I realized that I made a mistake on my 21-22 FAFSA. I want to correct it.

And I’m asking why? Would you be asking for more need base aid….or would you be asking for less?

Or…is your college saying they won’t process your aid for second semester without this tax transcript?

I’m not sure why you need a tax transcript to make a correction on a FAFSA entry. Since you had to enter all of the data by hand, you can go into your FAFSA and amend it, making the correction…and then submit to your college.

Did you do that already?

I would be asking for more aid in this case. I have already submitted my FAFSA.

Did you correct and resubmit the 2021-2022 FAFSA?

Also, does your college guarantee to meet full need for all students? If not, there is no guarantee that a reduction in income (per professional judgment) will net you additional aid.

I’m not sure in regards to the second question but for the first one I’ve already submitted it and I’m in my second semester. My school said that I needed to do a professional judgment because I already had my financial aid awarded to me.

Can you tell us which college? Or confirm it is on this list? If the do no meet 100% of need they may not change your aid for the current year. And there is a chance they say to cover it with parent plus loans.

It sounds like they did your family a favor by not requiring some documentation at the time financial aid was awarded, but now that you are asking for more aid they need that documentation. Does your college require the CSS profile? I am guessing it does not since that has not come up. Most on the list above require the CSS.

How much additional money are you hoping for:

What is the original EFC for 21-22?
What is your updated EFC for21-22?
What is your EFC for 22-23?

No, I live in MD and I go to a community college. To be honest, I don’t really care about the aid, I don’t even want anymore money. I just want to make sure I have everything correct and won’t get into any trouble down the line.

When you did your original FAFSA filing for this academic year, 2021-2022….did you indicate that your parent had not yet filed their taxes? Or did you complete it after the taxes were filed (using the data from the completed return).

Ok, then I think you are over thinking all of this.

If you do not want additional aid for this year then the school will just need to wait for the IRS to catch up. You have made the adjustment to the error. No one is going to arrest you for an error on the FAFSA during Covid while a parent is retiring and you are at a community college. Just document you made an effort to correct this and move on.

If on the other hand your MD community college requested the documentation to move forward, then let them know the IRS still is the hold up.

Are you transferring to a four year college for 22-23 or do you have an additional year at the same CC? If you are staying then they should be able to see next years is correct and may be able to just move on.

You mention your father filed his taxes late. What about your mother? Are your parents married?

What was the change on the FAFSA? If it was something like tax filing status, or marital status of your parents…or who the custodial parent is…that is a change needing to be accurate.

I’m very flummoxed why you need to amend your FAFSA.

No, my community college isn’t requesting it again. I think you might be actually right in regards to me overreacting.

No, I actually think @Pathnottaken was right. I might be overreacting over this.

So…you don’t need additional money….and your school will give you your aid for this term? Then what is the issue?

With regard to falsifying info on the FAFSA…the thing is…if you get financial aid by knowingly providing false information on the FAFSA, it is considered fraud.

Since none of us know what the mistake you made was…we have no idea if you got need based aid and provided false information.

ETA…perhaps @kelsmom will chime in. BUT I think anyone can amend their FAFSA and resubmit at any time. This is NOT professional judgment. Professional judgment is when you are asking the financial aid office to review your FAFSA entries and perhaps adjust something…so that your EFC will be reduced. This could include things like one time extra earnings, medical expenses that don’t appear on the FAFSA, things like that. The financial aid officers, with sufficient documentation, can sometimes adjust these figures. That is professional judgment.

Amending your FAFSA to reflect accurate information…that’s different…in my opinion.

So, I could just change my FAFSA at anytime?! Even during the semester?!

@kelsmom can you please explain this.

Your FAFSA can be amended at any time and resubmitted to any college. BUT as Kelsmom mentioned upstream, a newly submitted FAFSA might trigger a verification process.

If you are trying to change your custodial parent, or your two parents both filed as head of household separately (but they are married to each other), that’s a little different than goofing when entering an amount of income or assets. IN MY OPINION.

What needs to be changed on your FAFSA? Hard to give you decent advice…and no one here wants to steer you incorrectly.

If you have already resubmitted your 2021-2022 FAFSA (you said you did), then make an appointment to talk to a financial aid officer to see if anything else needs to be done.
