Here's my situation, Im 20 yrs old undergrad student in community college. Sometime, I think about my life and hate my life sometime i cry thou, my life sucks. I always wanted be a doctor. My dad got sick I had to change my hopes to become a nurse and specialize in somethin else, well I dont know I will do it or not. :( my dad had a stroke in 2009 when i was finishing my high school senior year, his brain was operated due to massive amount of bleeding, so everythin that i hoped and dream changed. Family situation all upside down without my dad helps. He ended being in ICU for couple months, miracles happened he survived from it, got a little better, still right side of his body paralyzed :( anyway my dad still sick, probably he's gon be on the bed for rest of his life, he can respond and he can eat, still a sick person, he lost his speech, tats very sad story.

Since all our family situation changed, i had to put my college edu on hold and work for 1 or somethin years to help my mom. We had to rely on government helps but still not enough I had to work my a** off. My dad always wanted to be proud of me doing good in school and becoming a somebody, he wanted me to be a doctor. I promised him, I'll do it, dad. Since my dad is a stroke victim, my dream of being a doc is bigger thou. Im dying to become one. Im 20 yrs old rite now, starting all my pre med to graduate in nxt 4 yrs, is tat possible? I think im a little late :( 4 yrs of undergrad, 4 yrs of med school, some more yrs of residency. Should I follow my dream or just become a nurse to help my family?? I want my dad to be proud of me being a doc too :( I dont know wut to do. I need help!!

my dermatologist started med school when she was 28, which is much later than most people, but still managed to become one of the top derms in the country by her 40’s. It’s never too late. Just go for it and try to reach for your dream.

First of all I am so sorry to hear about your situation, and will pray for you, your dad and your family. That was a very selfless thing you did for them. Second, I’m going to start pre med and I’m 21 years old, I took a year and a half after high school for no apparent reason and took 2 and a half years finishing my general ed at cc because I was so confused about what to do with my life. I myself am afraid that I am going into this whole med thing too late, then I thought to myself…I am only a few years behind! those few years will not make a difference once I am a doctor. You are young! you can do pre med! We only have one life and I believe we should live it to our full potential. You will have to make a few sacrifices at first (because of alllll the school) but the end result will be so rewarding and be all worth it. Live your dream and make your dad and family proud. Don’t let anything hold you back, your dad will want it that way I want to know if you go through with it, then I won’t feel as bad going into med so late :D

Zeymin, it’s never too late. I have family friends that started Medical School after 12 years of finishing undergrad. One thing that you can do is you can write in your essays + supplements what is happening with you and your father and how it inspires you to want to become a doctor. Work hard (get your GPA at least 3.6 at a decent school with a good pre-med program), start finding medically-related internships, shadow MDs, do research, and volunteer with something your passionate about. Maybe volunteer at a facility with people who suffer from damages from stroke and you can relate it to your passion to want to become a doctor (to make your dad proud). Med school want someone who is passionate about being a doctor and you have to prove to them how you are willing to spent your next 30-40 years of your life trying to save someone. Good luck!

Also, there are also scholarships + gov. program that you should look for that can help with paying for school. Maybe join the military medical program that pays you a stipend, pays for undergrad and medical school) hook is that you have to serve as a doctor in the army for 8 years but you’ll get payed almost the same as a new doc.

Thank you guys so much, I haven’t been on this site for a while, been busy. What you guys said means so much to me. I have a discipline and I’ll do it.
