I want to know more about other Brown students

I’m going to Brown next year and I’m curious and VERY EXCITED about my future classmates. So, tell me, what are your interests, values, background, personality, etc? What do you do now for fun? What activities do you think you’ll do when you get to Brown? Hopefully, we’ll meet each other at ADOCH or at some other time in the next four years!

Good idea for a post. Here are some sundry tidbits about me:

I a male (heterosexual). I didn't watch this Superbowl, just like I never have never seen one. I am not a sports fan. I like money, but don't have any. Providence is on the other side of the country. I am a grammar freak, but this post probably won't reveal it. I never learned how to type. I am interested in art history and English the most, but most everything interests me quite a bit. I believe in virtue, chivalry, and kindness. I think our President is ruining our country (not to mention other parts of the world). I am not a tree-hugger, but I think respect environment is extremely important. I admire Thoreau. I don't like crass humor. I hate the way most teenagers dress. I play the guitar. I would like to study at Oxford while I am at Brown. I would like to go Harvard for graduate school (let's see how my grades are in a year). I have been mistaken for conservative, but I am liberal. I would be living in Manhattan right now if I had the money to get a decent place. I tend to have very different opinions from your average high schooler. I can't go to ADOCH (I am going to France and Italy, instead). I like to dream about the future. I cannot wait to go to Brown.

Nice to meet you :)

Good, you sound very interesting, and I'll describe myself later. I'm feeling lazy right now and will only respond in short posts. Wow, a heterosexual male going to Brown! Amazing! You're not even bisexual? Not even transgender? I like how your posts are stylistic, with the "yadda yadda but yadda yadda." I smell a future novelist. I LOVVVVVVE to write, but every English teacher I've had since seventh grade has told me that I am incoherent and a ****ty writer. I think they're wrong. Anyway, I did watch the Superbowl but normally I find watching sports boring. I'd much rather play them! I might want to go to Harvard for grad school, but I chose Brown for undergard for, well, obvious reasons. I, too, have been mistaken for being conservative, but that's because I don't go crazy when someone uses the term "black" instead of "African American". I'd call myself overall liberal, but there are ways in which I am conservative, ways in which I am socialist, ways in which I am fascist. Well, that's an exaggeration, but I don't like to say I'm liberal or conservative because I think political views are more complicated than that. I like your chivalry, Tore VIII, and your disdain for other high school students :) I'll write more later, which probably means in a few minutes because I'm procrastinating from doing my homework. Send me a private message if you'd like.

"incoherent"

Egads! May I say that your teachers are incorrect?

'I don't go crazy when someone uses the term "black" instead of "African American"'

That's exactly how I am. Too many people are overly touchy (but then again, many people are not sensitive enough).

"Yadda yadda" reminds me...I love Seinfeld :)

I forgot to add something. I am vegetarian.

I agree with you about many people being too touchy (and about a lot of other things that you've been saying). Luckily (from what I know), most people who go to Brown are laid back, and not hypersensitive or easily offended, contrary to the stereotype. If that's the case, we're gonna have a great time in college :).

I'm getting more and more excited about Brown as I meet more and more kids. All of you are great! I can't wait to meet you!

Heh, I used to be a vegetarian (ages 6-13). But that's just because I copied my sister, and SHE was a vegetarian as well. I slowly started eating meat again, first just fish, then white meats, and then, well, everything. How long have you been a vegetarian?

Same here!

Brown is going to be so much fun.

P.S. Amazingly, soccart7, you have single-handedly brought this board back to life. Thanks!

Believe it or not, I've never had meat. I guess I will be eating at the Ivy Room a lot :)

Well, thank you for the compliment, tore. I respect your vegetarianism, as long as you don't try to preach it to others :), because I think animals are delicious.

To tell you the truth, I do not have strong beliefs about it. And I would never preach to anyone else about it (I wouldn't know what to tell them!).

By all means, enjoy your animals :)

Mmmm, cow.

Hey! (Soccart, have I talked to you on AIM?) I hope to get involved with the BDH at Brown. I was going to apply to Nothwestern's journalism school if I didn't get into Brown, mostly because journalism seems to be the only practical interest I have. Everything else--like classics, history, anthropology--seems to be not so useful. I don't believe in gay marriage, but only because I don't think the state should grant marriage to anybody. That's the church's business. Let everyone get civil unions and have equality that way. I'm all for gay rights, but not gay supremacy. Same thing with women's rights. (I'm a straight girl, btw). I love watching live sporting events and cheering like mad, but never being an actual cheerleader. God no. I'm a confirmed catholic, but only because I don't want my parents to practically disown me like they did my brother. I used to want to be a writer, but decided I didn't have any style, which is why journalism is perfect. Oh, and I suck at Texas Hold'Em, but love playing, so I tend to lose a lot of money.

Yes, we have spoken on AIM, and it's great to speak to you again :). You shouldn't give up your interest in writing right away. Just because you didn't have any style in high school doesn't mean you won't develop your style later on. I'm thinking of doing some journalism and writing at Brown, too. Maybe the BDH. Maybe Brown's indie newspaper, or maybe something else. I might start a humor magazine.

A future BDH writer! How exciting! Can you send me your autograph :)

I suppose you don't want to remain in academia, then, RaboKarabekian, and teach classics, anthropology, history, et cetera?

Is that what you're planning on doing, toreador? Remaining in academia? I kinda like that idea.

I would love to remain in academia and just teach and have a dusty office with obscure books and wear terrible clothes, but it won't matter because professors are allowed to do that. It just sounds rather difficult to 1)get a PhD and 2)actually get a job as a professor.

I dunno. It can't be that hard. Just teach at a random university in the middle of nowhere.

I'm not sure. I really have no idea. I wish I knew :) Maybe.

I'm probably going to graduate school...How about you two?
