Will I be able to skip a semester or so by getting a 4 or 5 in AP physics 1 and AP calculus ab. My major is Architectural Engineering.I am an Indian and would probably try for Purdue,Cal Poly Slo,CU Boulder and Penn State.
My SAT score is 1580.Will Admission offices overlook my SAT score if I score well in AP and have a good GPA.I am bonne apply ad an Intl. Student.
I am gonna apply as an International Student*
I don’t think you can skip a whole semester for taking two classes.
Most AP credits only count as credit and help with the following semesters’ registration. At all of my children’s schools, they counted to get priority at the next scheduling event level.
Is this is your SAT CR+M+W score?
Yes Alfonsia
I know they are low but I also know that I can get a 5 in ap calculus ab and ap physics 1
I am an Indian aspirant
AP scores are not a factor during admissions. Your SAT score is terrible, and you will be up against a truckload of competitive students from all over the world. And taking 2 APs won’t even help you skip half a semester.
You should probably save your application fee unless you can do something about your SAT. Entry is your issue, not credits, internationals have to be more competitive, not less. Especially Indian applicants.
Alfonsia and DarkEclipse are right. As I also said in your “duplicate” thread, you should definitely retake the SAT (or take the ACT) - your score now is quite low.
No
At most you will get 3 semester hours for each of those tests, so half a semester. But, you have to get into a college first, which will require higher SAT scores.
Enough is enough!
You all are discouraging me.
I know my Indian friends and cousins who got into Purdue and Penn state with SAT scores of 1700 and 1510 respectively.
And you all are saying that I won’t get admission!
This is ridiculous!!!
I have seen some blogs which critisize CC as it is filled with some braggarts who themselves are not good ones and demotivate others
I have concrete proofs that prove my hypothesis.
So you all are lying!
Hence, proved.
Look at each colleges policy on how AP test scores are treated. Almost every college will give credit for AP scores. It might require a 3,4, or 5 score depending on the college and the AP subject. By all means apply despite your SAT scores. The CC community does sometimes overstate what’s really required to get into a college. If you assumed every post was completely true and correct, even the best students would be discouraged. Very strong AP scores and a high GPA can help compensate for a weaker SAT. Your 1580 is a little above the US average. Good luck!
Oh no, Ryanite feels discouraged, whatever are we going to do?
We’ve given our opinion. Your “hypothesis”, which FYI, is not used in the correct context, was nonexistent.
Why don’t you apply, and find the decisions out for yourself? Did anyone here tell you that you won’t get into the colleges? Are you imagining things? No one said it. NO ONE. So stop your incessant blabbering, and try to READ and UNDERSTAND each post that’s been written above you, instead of supplying incomplete information and angrily retaliating.
alfonsia said “entry is your issue”
So I replied somewhat rudely
That’s because entry is your issue.
We aren’t saying you won’t get in these schools, but your chances are greatly reduced with a lower SAT score. A high GPA might compensate though. AP scores are rarely factored into college admissions, as many schools do not offer AP, but they can get you credit. But AP Physics 1 and Calculus AB isn’t a semester’s load.
The policy of whether AP scores can be used as credits vary by school and by major. There is usually some page on the school website that explains it; if not you can ask admissions. Even for schools that accept AP scores as credits, usually they only do so for non-core classes. So for example in Engineering, Calc would be considered core and the college will want you to take their class to make sure you are well grounded.
However, all that is moot if you are not accepted into the college because of your SAT score (it’s 1580 out of 2400?). You will be competing against fellow Indian students with near perfect SAT scores. If you are serious then you need to study and retake.
Yes
I am retaking it
Retake the SAT.
Coming from India, I assume English is your second language. With that in mind, I don’t even think a 1580 is that bad. Give him a break. Good luck–but as everyone else said, really try to prioritize on the SAT rather than your AP Exams. It’s a far greater factor in admissions.
I retook the SAT and got 1650
Math 650
CR 490
CW 510
Now any chances for Arizona State University?
I mean, maybe. ASU isn’t hard to get into. But be mindful. Some colleges will only let you skip a class and take something else in it’s replacement and in that case, AP credit won’t give you actual college credits.
And I don’t mean to be discouraging, but I wouldn’t expect to get into Purdue or Cal Poly Slo for engineering as an international student with a 650 on the SAT.
