I want to start MUN

I really want to start a model UN at my school. I love international relations and want to major in them. Could somebody give me some tips on how to start. I live in a fairly large area of Virginia (Harrisonburg- 50,000).

I need to start from scratch so any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks guys.

Doesn't your school have a MUN club you can join? Why not just go to a meeting when it begins? That's what I did, but I never pursued it strongly enough to actually be an active member of the club.

No, we don't have a MUN club.

Can you start one? You could kill two birds with one stone. Start a club and be in MUN while doing something you are interested in.

Yeah, but the whole idea is I don't know how to start one.

The whole point of this thread is that I don't know to start one.

Take a look at Model United Nations: MUN Starter Kit - UN Cyberschoolbus

Where is a good place to find a sponsor? Literally all of the humanity teachers are packed full of other ECs they sponsor.

there is a new thread about someone wanting to start a Model UN at their school like every month. just wanted to point that out.

I actueally want to start one too but have no idea how to go about it.

Actually i do but i have no idea how many people will join and what i will do if only like 5 people do.

That's a problem for me as well. Generating interest. My school is more arts and music rather than current events and politics.

Mine is math and science. Plus we already have a debate club so all the poeple interested are already in that i bet.

Same thing! We have debate club and a debate team (which I'm in) that are in that. MUN just looks like SO Much fun though.

Too true. But I couldn't not jump in with my own advice :p

My school is REALLY sports oriented and we had about twelve people in MUN when I joined, but we had a mock debate in assembly - the resolution was on Barbie and her negative influence on teenage girls. :) What made it funny was that everyone had a straight face even though they were saying frivolous things. Once you get a club set up and you have a few members, do an advert for MUN in the format of a mock debate on a silly topic. People actually do join. If you really have no idea where to start, PM me.

Oh and don't just approach humanities teachers to be your sponsor. We have four MUN teachers; our director is a MATH teacher. :)

i'm the president of our club and have been doing it for six years... usually the best places to look for sponsors are history teachers. also, since you don't know much about it, ask another school if you can attended their conference just to observe. its something thats really hard to explain because its really formal like debate and its good to just be in the situation. when you go to the conference save all you opening packets and resolutions your committee writes and make copies of them and then teach your club through that. its also good to do mock committee sessions with the people in your club. and you're right, MUN is great =)

im vp of my club :) model un really is fun, you should start one. but TRY people to use the search function for topics like this.

Hey, if you want tips about conferences / procedure / how to do well, PM me. I'm more than willing to help out. MUN was one of my favorite things I did and that I will hopefully continue.
