Couldn't find a better spot for this. I am from a large high school outside of Dallas TX and we lack a lot of things that other large high schools have. Our administration turned down having a school newspaper last year and likes to make school the experience from hell!

I've always wanted to start a Model United Nations Club. I just returned back from a year in South America as an exchange student and it has definitely convinced me that I would like to work overseas one day. I have a high international relations interest.

Anyone have experience starting a MUN club? Anyone in MUN? I don't know very much about it. I know the basics of what it is. Can anyone explain more information?

Anyone know of any websites with GOOD information about it (other than un.org -- the first thing that pops up on google)...

Anyone ever start one? Anyone have a fun story to tell me about MUN? Anyone an ACTIVE member?

Help educate me so that I can start one!
Any information helps (websites, blog postings, pics...anything I am desperate)...

Feel free to IM me (nickdechile) or email me at nhalltx@gmail.com

Thanks Y'all!

MUN is awesome. It was my favorite EC in high school and I was very active in it.

The best fun stories are the pick-up line sheets that go around in the conference sessions. There are always kids there who don't really want to debate and just pass notes to each other. The pages give some to the chair and they'll read them all out loud at the end. My personal favorite: "So what's your favorite position on the floor?".

Ooh, and at the last conference I was at, some girl sent out a note to a cuter male delegate that read "I want your body". The reply: "I want your vote". Hmm.

Sounds like we don't get anything done, but we really do. At my last conference I passed an important question resolution almost unanimously (in a committee of ~125). It was about integrating developing nations into the global economy. Great resolution. :)

I love Model U.N. At first, I only joined it because I watched Winning London with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and thought it would be something like that. But it wasn't. It's really fun though.

There are some really competitive kids who really take it seriously just to win the prizes that are given out and it's really annoying. My partner and I wrote a draft resolution that included forcing citizens of countries in debt to work in labor camps making Furbies and barbies until that debt is paid and those who resist will be the victim of nuclear bombing. It was really popular with everybody and we probably would have won best resolution if the chair hadn't stopped us from passing it.

Model U.N is very fun, and living in New York City we met in the actual United Nations(I had my meetings in the General Assembly room!). It is very competitive at these things and those of us who aren't very outgoing kind of get hushed. However it can be very fun.

At our school, my global teacher set it up, so i'm not sure how to get it started. You do need to write position papers, hand out committees, etc, so it's a lot of work, but well worth it. Good luck!

I'm an active member, just pm me if you have any questions 'cause i'm too tired right now to give a full description of MUN. lol.

I helped start a Model U.N. club at my school. PM me with specific questions and I'd be happy to help you--MUN is totally awesome :)
