I Want to Switch My Major From Mathematics to Computer Science

I don’t know if this conversation just started because I am burned out from all the math, but I really want to switch even though teaching has been my dream. Deep down, I still love math but I am hating the position I am in right now. I am a sophomore in college and it’s my second semester. It is a really late switch and a just completed the hurdle of calc 2. The only problem with my switch is I have never taken a CS course in my life besides the Cs course coming up which is for engineers (even though I am math major). All of my gen eds would be done for computer science except the 8 (give or take) CS courses I would have to take. I have an average gpa of a 3.9 on a 4.0 scale and have been on the Deans List multiple times so grades are not an issue. Please, give me feedback whenever you guys can. I am so nervous about the switch.

Also, I have not switched yet. Sorry about the weird text. I am running on my own tears and coffee.

You can still switch, but note that computer science can still be math-intensive, depending on what you study.

Right. I would still have to take discrete mathematics which I would be totally ok with to get a BS.

A CS course for engineers? Are you talking about CE (Computer Engineering)?

I’m kind of perplexed about what you’re asking or worried about. There is a lot of math involved when you’ll dive into algorithms and data structures, so don’t worry, you’ll have enough math by the time you’ll graduate, unless you’re interested in AI or some numerical algorithms (PDEs ftw!), then you’re in for some more interesting stuff. Basically, the more math, the better. Most card games (such as Poker) involve lots of probability and combination problems, just as an example.

I guess sitting in front of a compiler (or interpreter) for a few hours is something most people don’t like doing … at all, I guess. As a CS major in the last semester of my 2nd year, I can tell you that this is what you will be doing.

Well my computer science teacher in my high school(currently a junior in high school), double majored in mathematics and computer science. They sort of go together man.

Off topic, but he’s a huge idiot.
