I did my best but I got to Cs on my transcript (both in very difficult subjects) and 2 As. I am a freshman and I hate my current college. I want to transfer to a competitive state school like unc, umich, uva but I do not think these grades are going to get me in. I am confident that I can get all As in the classes I am taking next semester and I definitely do not want to come back to my current school for a second year. What should I do? I NEED HELP!
Is this your state school you’re talking about?
No
Where else were you admitted last year? Those would be your best bets. You could contact the admissions offices and ask if your file can be re-activated. Even a couple of Cs your first semester might not look bad to them.
Another option is to ace your classes in the spring, and then take a semester off while you apply to transfer. Think about that too.
Why do you hate your current college? Is there anything you can do to make your life better there for the time you will be stuck there? Pop over to the counseling center and get some advice on coping with things.
My current school if not a good fit but I am trying. It’s a private school where the kids are entitled and hard for me to relate to. Do you think it would be a mistake to apply to schools after my bad semester?
If you want a decent shot at all of getting into UNC or Michigan, you need a solid year of very good grades. You will probably need good prof recommendations. Have a look at what these schools require of transfer students. Many colleges will not accept freshman transfers. Your transfer apps for Fall 2018 will be due probably in March or April. It is difficult to transfer anywhere for a spring start becasue colleges don’t usually have anything to help spring transfers acclimate. It can be hard to break into established friend groups as a transfer too. Do a bit of,homework before you decide to cut the cord with your current school. It seems to me that you just haven’t found your people yet. Have you tried volunterring, getting a job at the cmapus dining hall or book store, or gone to the campus ministry? Those are all great ways to meet like-minded people. I am sure not everyone is entitled.
I think yes, it will possibly be a waste of time to transfer with your current grades to anywhere really competitive. You will need to send a current progress report in all likelihood too, so you want to start next semester with strong grades. If you are confident you can get all A’s, you need to do that at your current school. What is going to be different at another school? Many kids take a long time to settle in. Think about the sound reasons you chose your current school, and figure out what you are running from, or to.
