New Start at College?

Hi everybody,
I’m looking for hope that a fresh start at college does exist. I am 19 already a few semesters in as a part time student at a community college. Things are not going well. My GPA is extremely low and I’m on academic probation. I’m also frustrated because I can’t seem to get ahold of the right counselors that will speak to those on academic probation. I would like to enroll to another local community college. I originally wanted to go there and I’m very excited about it. Am I able to leave my bad grades and GPA at this college behind and start from scratch?

No, you have to report your first CC grades to any school you transfer to. Colleges will run you through the National Student Clearinghouse and if they find out that you’ve omitted your previous academic record they’ll rescind your acceptance or revoke your degree.

Also, just moving on without figuring out what isn’t working where you are makes it more likely that your problems will follow you. Have you talked to your teachers about why you are struggling in their classes?

Wow :frowning: that sucks

Well, yes it “sucks,” but it doesn’t mean the end of your academic career. Many students initially fail out of college – whether it be a community college or a 4 year school – and go on to graduate. You can too. But first, you need to figure out why you’re doing so poorly, and address it. If you can’t talk to advisers in your current CC, call the CC you’re interested in and find out what your options are. Ask about their transfer policies and based on that make a plan of action. Build up your GPA. It can be done. But you have to WANT IT. And that means, be willing to learn to work more effectively than you are working right now.

If you can’t meet with the academic advisors, go see the counseling center instead. Maybe this is an unidentified learning difference, or an emotional issue that the counseling center can help you get a handle on.
