I want to transfer from UCSB to UCI as a biomedical engineering major.

I'm a first year at UCSB and I want to transfer to UCI as a biomedical engineering.

I have 24units from AP classes I took in high school and after this winter quarter, I should be a sophomore standing. My fall quarter's GPA was 3.23 and I did not do any extra curricular and although I'm qualified for work study, I was not able to find a job for myself so I also didn't work. So basically as of now, I have a 3.23 GPA with no extra activities that I do.

I've been trying to find the best way for my to transfer to UCI but i'm confused on what best for me in order to transfer to UCI. I talked with an adviser at my school and she told me that if i go to a community college with a TAG agreement, I will have a higher chance of getting into UCI. But when I called UCI's admission's office, they told me that because I already have coursework done at another UC, it doesn't give me priority for transferring to a community college, then to UCI.
But I still feel like going to a community college at Irvine will allow me to have a higher change of getting admitted and I'll have more support from the community college advisers who know what they're doing. Also I believe its easier for me to get higher GPA going to a community college than staying at a UC. Yet I'm also scared about what would happen if i drop out of UCSB and not get into UCI. Also, if I am to stay at UCSB, I'm not sure if I should solely focus on fulfilling my transfer requirement for that major of if I should still consider the major prerequisite at UCSB.
Please tell me what I should be doing right now. Would going to a community college in Irvine help me transfer into UCI? Or would you recommend me just staying at UCSB as a backup? Also if you guys know any other ways I could have a better chance of transferring into UCI, please let me know. I would love to transfer to UCI as soon as I can. Thank you.

Personally, I feel what the admissions office is telling you is correct. This is also what I’ve heard somewhere. If you have a SIGNIFICANT amount of work completed at a University, then I don’t think you will be considered along with the community college students (I’m not a 100% sure of this, but I’m fairly certain I heard it from a reliable place). However, I don’t know what they would count as “significant”

I don’t think UCI is all that difficult to transfer. With your gpa I would definitely be surprised if they did not give you admission. Now if you were talking UCB or UCLA that would be an entirely different matter. UCSB is pretty highly rated for engineering (if I recall correctly, significantly higher than UCI). I am assuming you want to transfer at the UPPER DIVISION level.

Also, are you in a different major at UCSB??..because the engineering requirements at almost all of the UCs are pretty much very similar. If you’re not (and I suppose, even if you are), I would strongly suggest you follow the engineering curriculum (which mostly consists of the Calculus series - Calc I, Calc II and CalcIII, Diff Eqns/Linear Algebra; and the Physics series Mechanics of Solids, E&M, Thermodynamics and “modern physics”). For bioengineering it would be benefical to take some biology courses per UCI’s requirement. Additionally, UCI is not extremely picky if you’re missing a pre-req or two, because they are not THAT competitive. If you maintain your current gpa (maybe even try to improve it a bit) and complete all their pre-reqs I don’t think you should have any trouble getting into UCI

Also, I think it would be very difficult to transfer at the lower division level

just out of curiousity, why do you want to go from UCSB to UCI?

I actually am more interested in biology. I love learning how the body works and what causes what etc. So I might just want to major in general biology at UCI. But if I dont get in to UCI, I might just major in biophsycology or physiology.

I want to leave UCSB to UCI because I honestly can not stand the surrounding of UCSB. I feel like UCSB is really isolated from the actual community of santa barbara and i feel left out from the real world. What people do for fun here seems to be just partying or surfing,(i knew santa barbara was big on these but I didn’t think it’ll be this hard to find activities that doesn’t include the two) and there’s almost no place around Sb that I could go for fun like a shopping mall etc. Also, Santa barbara is expensive than I thought and I can’t go out to eat when I get tired of the dorm food because of the price. Also, I only found one, small, Japanese supermarket in santa barbara which is too far from UCSB for me to access and I really miss japanese food. I want to go to UCI over the other UC’s because I want to do a biology related major and I looked at the other schools major but none except UCI and UCLA interested me but I highly doubt I’ll get into UCLA with my gpa which is why I want to try transferring to UCI

why not UCD or UCSD? those two are renowned for their biology.

UCD I’ve driven past by once and I thought that it also was very isolated by towns nearby. And for UCSD, I havent visited myself but from what i hear, the campus is really spread out and I prefer being in a tighter community where I can walk around instead of having to drive considering the fact that I dont have a car.

Go to UCSD and get a skateboard or a bike.

If I want to go to UCSD, what GPA do you think I need to have to have a good chance of being admitted?
And I just talked with my mom about how I’m feeling at SB and also how hard it is to take classes because of the budget cut so I might just go to a community college near my house next year and then try to transfer to either UCSD or UCI but what do you guys think about this? wise choice?

that is a wise choice, and if u do that, ull be given priority over other UC-UC transfers, and ull need a lower GPA to get in. and u can sign a TAG with I, and that way ull have that garunteed if u dont get into SD. SD wont let u TAG since uve already been to a UC and i dont think they let u take for bioengineering (correct me if im wrong), i know for a fact that, that major is their most impacted.

Are you sure about the TAG program with Irvine? I recall talking with the administration people and they told me I can’t do TAG because I have been at another UC. and they also told me I won’t get priority over the other UC-UC transfer because I’m still considered a UC student to them.

ohh, you should call them and find out.

I’m not sure if you could do a tag. You should note that you would need to take more units at the CC than you did at UCSB in order to be considered a CC transfer, otherwise you will be treated as a UC to UC transfer.

Hey applepie, did you get into UCI?

According to the TAG Matrix, UC coursework is acceptable but they do have limits on the number of units. UCI does accept UC coursework as well, did they recently change this?

how long until we find a thread titled: i wanna transfer from Berkeley to riverside?

UCI is in a very expensive city – and I mean expensive.
I’m studying in the UCI Gateway Study Center right now since I live in Irvine, and planning on transferring to SB.

Big campus also, its 2x the size of UCSB and its a commuter school.

I’m attending UCR but want to transfer to UCI x)
