I want to transfer

<p>I am currently a senior in highschool and I am a terrible student r/n :(
I want to transfer in one semester to Carnegie Mellon b/c its my dream school and I love Computer science. I also would frankly love to learn Artificial intelligence in the institution which established the field.
I am not great at english infact this year is when i actually sat down and learned the parts of speech :(
I need help, I want to transfer to CMU(1) or jhu or Caltech/Mit(which i heard its like .06% percent so not bothering with it too much)</p>

<p>Major: CS
Highschool GPA: sucks, idk out of 4.0gpa if anybody could translate that would be fantastic, 89.79
rank: 10/139</p>

<p>SAT(took 1ce in junior b/c at the time i didn't know too much about it):
1520 Breakdown(CR,M,W): 440, 590, 500
SAT( senior year second time kinda messed up because i had mixed schedules up with community service and clubs stuff and subject test): 550, 660, 570 I do hold the highest scores at my school which kinda gives you guys an idea of where i come from-
SAT2 also horrible: 640 Math I, 620 MathII, 450 Chem</p>

<p>Our school doesnt have Ap courses nor IB or anything rigorous... first graduating class
I had a horrible chem teacher (nice but bad teaching):
regents grade: 74 and I hold the highest score in my class ;(((((((((((((((((((((
theres one more kid that took it from another class and got 85
and didn't study. He initially had the highest sat scores which was 600 cr and 600 math and 550 writing
but hes so freaking lazy and he dropped the score to a 1600 second time around</p>

<p>Additional academic info:
this year, I am taking AP calculus (ab i assume) after school at another school in the district from
5-7pm its really fun :P. I am doing well on practice exams.</p>

<p>Community service and shiz:
200 hours at library
few hours every day at robotics
Midfielder soccer at uncooperative team >:(
Track and field (senior yr and its going well)
Key club president
Math club president
Habitat for humanity
Student body VP
Junior achievement</p>

<p>Hobbies:
I like to program with Ruby language and specifically in a framework called Rails (idk about other gems too much) I wrote a few web apps haha its funny.
I know abit java but its just enough to make a box or ai game
breakdancing
kung fu
playing video games but rarely i do because i never finishem and starting new ones just haunt me and old ones friends dont play so i stopped altogether</p>

<p>Hooks(none):
asian/male <- worst combination with grades</p>

<p>Disadvantages: Single mother, horrible father who owes money to my mother(not just child support but actually borrowed money like 100k), we lived in horrible conditions basements and cellars, foreign to language I was born in US but went back to my country at an early age, i had add and I was really weak and skinny I could not learn without being hyperactive when i was younger but still i was told i was really bright by bright kids at my age but... as you can see im not so bright. I live in the ghetto :(</p>

<p>Oh yeah i took act once, I was late for it because of snow senior year and it was 2 hours away(nearest non-full location)
composite: 25
English: 21 (came in like 30 mins late)
Math: 31 ( i can try to do better but idk i have no study friends only friends who think they are so smart that they dont need to study)
Reading: 26(sucks i know)
Science: 23(was freaking clueless the entire thing until like 15 minutes left i realized it was just common sense stuff but ill be honest im not great at stuff, im not smart so idk)
Writing: 10</p>

<p>Can you tell me, should i retake sats/acts etc? What can I do to improve my chances and build a solid transcript
i know my first semester gpa should be atleast 3.7+ (hard but i want to find friends who study not play or who can manage their time well and i will learn from em)
Would anyone give me advice for sat for transfer? also satii</p>

<p>College probably going: City college of NY (i got 14k per year so its basically covered)
or stony or fordham and transfer
reason:
I like smaller schools and ones that better fit my major. I dont like too many people, i get kinda overwhelmed. I also dont like city location too much. I also want my hard working mother to feel better talking about her son going to a really prestigious university that people from my country would know.
I don't want to be useless.</p>

<p>Bump, will chance/ give advice</p>

<ol>
<li><p>Check the college websites, not all colleges accept sp transfers; eg. JHU.</p></li>
<li><p>For a sp transfer, you will be applying at the end of this summer/early fall. At most colleges will see a midterm report for fall sem in college, so your admission will be almost entirely based on your HS record (gpa, course rigor & test scores).</p></li>
</ol>

<p>

</p>

<p>You have to retake your SAT/ACT. As a soph transfer, your HS record and test scores are still very important, and your current scores are below what the colleges you listed believe are adequate preparation for a successful student. Even as a jr transfer, test scores are taken into consideration for highly selective colleges.</p>

<p>Subject tests are only for HS students, once you’re in college they are replaced by your college record. </p>

<p>

</p>

<p>It’s fine to do something to make your mother proud of you, but it’s not good to seek prestige to impress other people. At this point in time your plan is highly unrealistic and may result in your feeling useless. There are many places you can do CS & AI, restricting your vision to 4 these schools is nearsighted and will not serve you well. </p>

<p>The ONLY thing that should concern you at this point is going into fr year and getting excellent grades in all of your classes. Since you were not a good student in HS, that itself will be a big accomplishment. You should be aiming at a jr year transfer, and only start planning which colleges to apply to after your fall sem of soph year when you have a year and a half of grades and other accomplishments to base your school list on.</p>

<p>Thanks for the response, I have signed up for act, I still have 3 months before hs
Should I sign for subject test in May or June </p>

<p>Btw I am a senior in hs incase you didn’t see it from top
I would be considered low income in a 3 person family
But I am 2 person including me so I can’t even get proper finically aid… :confused:
I never had a proper trig teacher, he was mostly absent and he crammed during our finals it was a honors class and nobody passed except me and 2 ppl
That’s also why I did horrible on sat ii math
Also for chem, I never got to take honors chem or ap or ib chem because our district is so poor
I heard about through my old friends we talked on Skype and he was telling me about his course load
Any advice?</p>

<p>I think I also have a.d.d which would only allow me to focus on what I think is most yielding not beneficial
I’ve learned to control it, I just want to learn study habits. I couldn’t study well because of friends playing abit too much. I regret so much not being able to score well on sat
I think I can but I just don’t understand English too well, so if anybody would study with me or give me an advice and stuff that would be great. School gave me a online sat course… In freakin November and I took it in December
I studied in summer on num2 pencil</p>

<p>Cmu has always been my dream school since m.s
Ty, I wasn’t sure if they simply wanted to see the scores as a previous guideline in comparison to grade in collllege
Or as an actual factor in the decision… Ty
I just never went into a prestigious secondary institution like a good hs that offers great academic clubs or classes.
I’m not afraid of being challenged but my schedules a mess and I want help
I hate studying last minute</p>
