I was curious about my Chances at Brown

Hi everyone, how are you all doing?

Now, my top choice school is Brown and I’ve been in somewhat of a dilemma in these past few days. I am absolutely in love with Brown and have done a lot to show that (which I’ll enumerate on a bit more into this message), but I spoke to a college coach recently with my mother who feels I have a very slim chance at applying Early Decision to Brown, and thinks I should apply Early Decision to my second choice, Emory University where I have a much better chance.

Now, for my statistics (:-O):

I go to a decent public school that is ranked well among public schools in New York

My Average: UW (3.7), W (3.98)

I take the hardest course load possible and these are the AP’s I have taken and received:

World History: 3
U.S. History: 4
English Language: 4
2D Design: 5

I did very poorly on my ACT’s, so I’m not going to include that.

My SAT’s as of how I did last May are as follows:

Total: 1950
Math: 710
Reading: 600 (My bane)
Writing: 640

However, I retook them in the beginning of October, and I’m positive that I did much better, though I can put those scores into CommonApp on October 23rd when I receive them, so we shall see (I’ll repost them.)

Here are my Club and extracurricular activities:

Sports: Varsity Tennis-4 years (First Doubles Every year and won 1st doubles trophy 2 years in a row in 10th and 11th grade.)

Model United Nations (Treasurer 10th Grade, President 12th Grade)-4 years Also, i’m the Secretary-General of a district conference we hold annually.

Class Government (Publicity Coordinator)

Science Olympiad (President 12th Grade)-2 years I also built a Sumobot and participated in a series of events, but our school didn’t win any medals.

Science Bowl Member (Captain of our team this year)-2 years

Senior High Orchestra (Vice President 12th Grade) Spots are only available to Seniors, and I’m also first chair of the Viola section.

Photography Club-3 years

Stage Crew-2 years (Lights Manager)

Talented and Gifted Program-4 years

National Honor Society-4 years

Mathletes-3 years

Big Brother for 2 years and I work in the school Resource Room

I tutor a girl in Math and Sciences 3 times a week-1 year.

Paying Jobs:
Staff Asistant at an SAT Preparation Course (kind of ironic, eh?) - 1 year

Tutor a 7th grader 2 times a week - 1 year

Babysat for 2 children (10th Grade)

Community Service:

Helped Senior Citizens learn how to use the Internet and use Microsoft Office - 9th grade

Worked at a local hospital in the Physical Therapy Dept. - 35 hours

There is more, but people have said in the past that I have seemed to have a “laundry list”, so I don’t want the clubs I hold more valuable to be overshadowed by things that I participate in, but am not as involved in.

So far, my college essay is lighthearted, yet moving and funny (almost David Sedaris-esque.)

I did Two Summer @ Brown programs. One was in 8th grade in Nanotechnology which I’m not sure if that counts, and another I did after my Junior Year entitled “The U.S. in World Politics.” I am getting a letter of recommendation from my teacher there, which will hopefully help me on my quest to getting into Brown.

I also did a program in Nanotechnology at the University of Pennsylvania after the Brown Program following my Junior Year.

I really want to go into either International Relations/Global Studies or Materials Sciences (Nanotechnology.) Trying to double major might be absolutely absurd on my part, however the fact that Brown’s Engineering isn’t that strong might possibly be feasible (I talked to their Department about this.)

So, I don’t want to bore any of you with this longer, but it would be great to hear some feedback about my chances. If you think I should put up any more information regarding Extracurriculars/Clubs, then I will definitely do that. Other than that, thank you all very much and I deeply appreciate this.

Hey everyone! I also had another quick question. What is the percent difference between Early Decision acceptance rate and Regular Decision acceptance rate at Brown?

ed is somewhere around 20%, google it.
its getting lower every year

Yeah I checked that, it's about 22.7%, and the only thing with a higher chance is Cornell, but thank you for that.

I was still wondering, however, about my actual chances of getting in if anyone has experience with this.

Your scores and perhaps even your GPA are a bit low. But still, if Brown is your dream school, I think you should apply to them ED so you're not left thinking what would have happened. You have a good chance getting into Emory RD, just try retaking the SAT one or two more times before. As for activities, definitely cut some of them out. Leave in all the ones where you held a officer position, but take out things like Photography Club--they wouldn't help any and they just take away from your other more impressive ECs.
