Chances of Getting into Brown?~

Hey I know I've been posting quite frequently. The last time I posted, I was unsure whether to apply to Brown or Columbia University. However this time, I'm quite settled in applying to Brown University ED. I just wanted to ask for your opinion and what you all thing my chances are of getting into Brown. Thanks so much! I promise to chance you back. Here are my stats once again. My grades aren't too impressive but I am confident on outstanding essays and interviews.

I'm currently a Junior at a VERY competitive high school.
My GPA at the end of Sophomore year was a 95.0 but I expect it to raise into the 97's by the time my junior year ends. The reason it is so low is because I did not take Honor Courses 8th and freshman year. (8th Grade courses come up on my transcript)
I just took the SATs this march and I am taking it again this May. I did not get the score back but during practices I usually get around 2150.
My school offers IB instead of AP and I have taken advantage of this by taking All-IB Courses.
Alright so here are my stats and please Chance Me! Here goes!

Major: Political Science/ Pre-Law
I am asian (Korean) living in New York.
GPA: 97 Wtd
SAT: 2150 'ish

Essays: Outstanding
Rec's: Outstanding

I am a very strong speaker and I am very confident I can rock the interviews.
I also visted Yale, Brown, NYU and Columbia and took tours but my visits were never recorded, therefore i don't know if it will benefit me at all...

I'm not sure if I'm forgetting anything but yea. It's not that impressive but i can dream can't i? Please chance me and I'll be sure to chance you back. Thanks!

ok…don’t worry about your eighth grade year…most schools dont look before ninth grade…some don’t even look at ninth…

Brown is a crap shoot…for anyone…but ED will help and i’d say just go for it…you have a chance

wow i’m glad to hear that! Thanks!

bumppppppppp

Based strictly on the scattergram for MY school (which is a little skewed since, not to sound elitist, colleges look at my school like O_o), but:

Not to be the deliverer of bad omens, but you seem to be just below the admissions threshold SAT wise and GPA (once again, this is strictly based off the TJ scattergram).

Then again, you might be fine (these are the TJ scattergrams after all), since your extracurrics are /very/ good. And they do definitely have a humanitarian focus, which looks good.

You should be a pretty strong candidate.

Thanks Lencias, I looked at my schools graph too and my school as well is incredibly competitive. I fall way below the GPA mark but look alrite SAT wise. THere were like 4 people that got in that had 2000ish SATs but had close to 100 GPAs.

I was hoping my EC’s could improve my chances and because Brown is such a liberal school, I was thinking the humanitarian could also help. I am also going to write my essays on how I became passionate for these humanitarian causes.
Anyways thanks so much for your input! =]

bumppppppppppp

I like your non-Asian ECs haha.
I’d say Brown ED looks pretty good to me. I really don’t think your GPA would be a problem (do you have predicted IB grades?), though a higher SAT would be nice.

oh, and top schools generally don’t care about “interest” in the broad sense. they want to know that you’re a good fit, and that you intend to go to their school, but a campus visit is no big deal.

I think if you raise your SAT to like 2250-ish, then you appear to be a good candidtate for ED. Good luck, I hope you end up there! I love Brown, too! BTW, kudos on your ECs and strong essays!

Can you chance me back? I don’t know how to post links so,
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/699897-am-i-track-ivies-duke-wake-vanderbilt.html</a>

Thank you!

zephyravatar, what do you consider to be asian ECs? hahaha
and visits don’t really matter? that’s good actually because I just went and got a tour from one of their students. Nothing too “official”.
and btw do IB grades count for admissions? Or just for placement?

Big dreamer, that’s what I’m worried about. My SATs. It seems almost impossible to raise them. I’ve tried so hard! And yeah I’m in love with Brown. Everything anyone can ever want in a college. I hope to see you there someday! =]

just the stereotypical math/science ECs :stuck_out_tongue:
yeah, visits are more to learn more about the school rather than to show interest (at least for top schools)
I dunno. at our school, only our IB grades are submitted.

well, retake SATs anyhow (or try ACTs?). 2150 is not low, but it would still drag you down however slightly.

Yeah, FearNoEvil, I hope that we meet on the campus of our dream school sometime! I agree, Brown is awesome! :)

I am worried about my SAT score as well because I take it next weekend as a free practice test at my school, and I don’t have time to study for it right now (also have no prep material).

hahaha yea I’m terrible at math and science.
I’m so like non-asian if that even makes sense. My best subjects are History and English. That says a lot.
PLUS this year, I’m taking just 2 IB tests. 4 next year. So that means I will have 2 IB grades to submit to colleges. Bad thing is that its Math and Physics. (What a coincidence).
I’m not too sure about physics. Somewhat confident in math. I HOPE it doesn’t affect admissions. And yea I’m working on those SATs =]

Big Dreamer, sounds like a plan =]

Also don’t worry too much. You have plenty of time to prepare. I only got like in the 1770 on my PSAT. =[ ouch but what really helped was studying from a book. I recommend Barrons because its SO difficult. However, the real thing should be a piece of cake.

Yeah, you are the ultimate anti-Asian! You’re embarassing your people and turning white! (jk jk lol) I’m only taking one AP this year, but 4 next year, and possibly 6 senoir year (if school allows me, will see).

I like English because my teacher, Yale alumnus, is awesome! History isn’t my favorite, but I’m big time science and math (Greek thing, I guess!). Good Luck! :)

Thanks for the tip on Barons, will definetly check that out! I am going to study a TON for the fall SAT, and I need to check out the ACT probably. I should rest up for tomorrow, have to write an English essay by 3:30 tomorrow and need to wake up at 4:15a.m. to start on it! :(

haha i know. Don’t remind me.
Wow that’s a good amount of APs. I saw your stats and I think you have a REALLY good shot with Brown especially because of the fact that one of your parents went there. Plus you have pretty good stats. I gotta admit you have much higher chances than me. Although ivy leagues are always so unpredictable.

Agreed, Ivies are so HARD to predict, but maybe we’ll both get recruited to play basketball, win the Nobel Prize in Physics, and make billions.

OR…maybe we’ll both be degenerates in tears for decades after our dreams shattered! :(

I really hope that its the former! Thanks for the kind words!

It looks like you have a very solid chance at whatever college you look for, however with the Ivies its a crapshoot, you can look really good and still fail or you can get in solidly. Id say you look good though, Keep up the good work!

Thanks OutofOrder =] I agree with you that Ivies are very unpredictable. We’ll just have to see.
