I was DQ'd from CSU, but went back to a CC

Back when I was 19, I was academically disqualified from Cal Poly Pomona for having a 1.4X GPA. The reason for my GPA dropping were family issues at home and I found solace in "hanging out" with the wrong crowd. I just wanted to not come home due to the horrible atmosphere at home. After receiving the expulsion notification, I started working for a retail bank so I can move out of my house. I worked for the company for 9 years and received several promotions and recognition. In the last 3 of those years, I started attending a community college to continue my education and achieve a college degree. However, my GPA is not strong because of my transcripts from Cal Poly Pomona.

With Cal Poly's transcripts, I have about a 2.96 GPA according to UC's. However, other cal states average out the grades that I have for my repeated courses, which is between 2.4-2.7. My CC GPA is about a 3.4-3.5.

I have all of my IGETC and CSU breadth completed and my major is computer engineering.

Im in going to complete my math courses this semester and physics next spring. For majority of the UC's ill be missing about only 2-3 computational courses because its they are only offered once a year, which is every Fall semester.

While I was away from school, I received plenty of recognition from my job and became an assistant manager. I also helped out a friend's brother in helping to program an educational game for a start up company he started 2 years ago and was recently bought out by an investor and we're starting up a new project. For the time being, Im taking 21.5 units this semester and helping out with the new project. I recently quit my job to take school more seriously since I was never able to take a full load due to my responsibilities/obligations at my job.

I really hope to be able to transfer in Fall 2013. Will any universities accept me???

Oh, for this semester, I practically have 3 guaranteed A’s out of 5 classes. As for the other 2, its unsure but I am trying to earn A’s in them. The unsure classes are “Differential Equations and Linear Algebra” and “Physics: Thermodynamics and Electromagnetism”, which I’m seriously trying hard for…

1 of the 3 classes that I have a guaranteed A for is a major prep course. As for the other 2, they’re pre-reqs for additional major prep courses Ill be taking in winter and spring.

In your application essay you should write about your experience and how much you’ve grown/learned. Admissions departments LOVE students that come back and do well. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, you’ll be able to get in to a decent school.

Thanks for the advice. I really hope to get into a decent school, but I’m honestly worried… I know this semester will increase my GPA close to 3.1.

This is frustrating…

Would the UC’s consider the reason that cause my DQ? or will they mainly focus on my GPA?

jming00, I am in the same situation as you, I was just wondering how things have turned out. I also was academically disqualified from cal poly and after 13 years I am trying to return but it seems like they don’t really want me back. I was planning on applying to UC’s but it seems like my gpa from Cal Poly is going to haunt me.

I already talked to Cal Poly Pomona rep in regards to Academic Renewal but it seems that because I have done so well at my community college and I am not a current Cal Poly student I do not qualify.

Please let me know what you have found out on your situation because I am planning to finish at my community college this spring (2013) and was wonder how to proceed with the UC application process. Shoot me a message or an email.

You fall into the category called “non-traditional students”. Many colleges have outreach programs and special admission procedures for students like you.

I suggest you go to the xfer center at your CC and talk with them. Also you should look at the CSU and UC websites to see what you can find, including any xfer fairs they may have representatives attending at your CC or in your area so you can ask in person.

I have seen links on some UC websites for what are termed “re-entry students” such as http://www.admissions.uci.edu/admissions/admission_requirements.html;</a> the info about what procedures and services are available to you may be hard to find online, so contacting the UC and CSU schools directly might also be a good idea.

crshbadit-Ive send you a private message.

mike, thanks for the response. I have talked to the representatives and theyre not much help at all… either theyre new or something because their responses seem to fall under the category of “I’m not sure what the school will do with you.” Right now, i’m just trying to get better grades in all my classes and wishing for the best when I apply.

I tried to click on that link you posted, but i think that link is dead. Would you happen to have the correct one handy?

I’ve contacted many different UC’s and Cal States and all of the responses I get are very similar to one another, which is to keep my grades up, apply, and hope for the best…

Where you able to transfer to another school? I’m in the same situation, I got disqualified and went to a community college and now that I apply to.transfer I’m afraid I’m going to get my admission rejected.

hektttor, yes I was able to transfer to another school. I was accepted at ASU for now and I’m still waiting for responses from CSU’s and UC’s. My advice, try to get the best grades possible in all of your classes, including the GE’s. do you know how many units youve taken at the university you were disqualified from? Were they quarter or semester units?

im in the same boat as you, hows everything working out?

I went to cal poly Pomona also, got DQed.
