i was told I had a 0% chance of getting into Princeton. Is that true?

asian female from maine

gpa: 3.7/3.8
taken the toughest corseload, many AP's
class rank: top 5% (class size: 420)

SAT: 2200

extra curric:
-Mock trial captain (4 yr)
-Model UN (3 yr)
-Link Crew Leader (help the freshmen out (2 yr)
-Cello (9 yr)
-Rec sports k-12, not a big deal, just for fun

sports:
-Varsity outdoor track (4 yr) - All conference soph/junior yr
-Varsity indoor track (2 yr) - All conference junior/probaly senior yr
-Summer track club (it's not a camp, its a branch of USA Track&Field), this is the first yr i'm doing this, but there are many meets where the team will compete against college athletes and, i believe, professional athletes, we'll see how i do there! i've been told I have a chance of placing at these meets
-I am the state champion in my event, and ranked top ten in all of New England in that event. I've reached the national silver standard (possibly gold by the time I apply to colleges) and i have placed / won at many statewide (or spanning multiple states) meets

+hoping to do track in college, but idk anything about recruitment yet... will find out next year. i know it's a DI school so it will be hard to get recruited

thanks a lot for taking the time. it's really appreciated.

nobody has a 0% of getting in anywhere; admissions into colleges also relies on luck sometimes :)

From what I see, everything seems pretty good. might want to raise your SAT’s a little and is your gpa unweighted or weighted? i think you have just a good a shot as the other qualified applicants, given that you write well.

anyway, dont believe what other people tell you! from what i see, you definitely have a chance.

Like flushingxtoilet said, I think you definitely have a chance- as does anybody. A 2200 SAT score is pretty good. However, your safest bet would be to try and get recruited for track. Assuming your subject tests turn out pretty well, you should meet the AI requirement for athletes.

you have maybe a 4% chance.

you must run fast

You’re Asian, and that hurts your chances a lot. Asians are ORMs (Overrepresented Minority, or the new Jews). Likewise, being a recruited athlete helps a lot. Hopefully, you’re good enough on the athletic side to counteract the negative, racial component of admissions.

Otherwise, you are one of many, highly-qualified Asian applicants duking it out for a spot in the Ivy League. It’s an uphill battle for most.

They were wrong. My calculator shows that you have approximately a 3.3426873463271892765710 chance.

^Calculator?

You really should begin the recruiting process ASAP if you hope to run in college. Send e-mails to coaches expressing your interest and telling a bit about yourself. As a non-athlete, your application doesn’t stand out very well, especially amongst the Asian pool. If you are recruited, however, you have an excellent chance at making Princeton.

have you taken any SAT IIs? You’ll need 3 for Princeton.

Actually, I think that being asian isn’t a problem for him. He is a successful asian athlete, which should help bring him away from the stereotype of being an asian mathematical robot. Yeah, your grades aren’t anything too spectacular, but I think that your SAT score is fine. I think that if you want to get into Princeton, then you need to be recruited as an athlete.

Vango, actually only 2 SAT IIs are required this year.

Absolutely untrue. Being an Asian may not help you, but it does not hurt anyone’s chances “a lot,” certainly not enough to require being recruited to balance out “the negative, racial component of admissions.”

“As a non-athlete, your application doesn’t stand out very well, especially amongst the Asian pool. If you are recruited, however, you have an excellent chance at making Princeton.”

I am definitely going to try to get recruited, but if I weren’t, then wouldn’t the athletic accomplishment still help me to stand out?

If you weren’t recruited, the athletic accomplishment will help you - as all accomplishments do - but definitely not as much. I know two people who have won internationally for swimming competitions, and despite that they are not the strongest students academic-wise in their grade, their gpa is still really high and boast straight As on their transcripts. Not sure about their SATs though.

I will say give it a try. Just spend more time on your essay and try to make yourself stand out. Better to try than to regret later on.
