I was wondering...

Is a 3.3 GPA bad??
if it improves, will I be able to get into a top tier college?
Also, what should i be doing over th summer to improve my chances of getting into, say, dartmouth?

Work on ECs over the summer.
Pursue something you’re passionate about.
Take an SAT/ACT prep course.

Work hard on improving your grades…you may come from a super competitive high school…how do you compare to your classmates, GPA-wise?

We need more of a context here - what grade are you in? What are you ranked? Is that weighted or unweighted? Are you taking the most difficult courses available?

A 3.3 GPA would probably hinder your admission to Dartmouth- unless you come from a very prestigious private high school known for challenging academics.

Of course, you should try to bring it up if you can. GPA and test scores get you through the door, so you should try to bring it up.

And I pretty much agree with what UCBChemEGrad said: do as he says.

sorry, i didn’t really provide any detail
i don’t go to a prestigious boarding school, but i go to a well known public high
this was my gpa from freshman year, and while people say it doesnt matter, it worries me
i’m a junior now, and my grades have improved (4.0) but this 3.3 is such a pain
i was at a small boarding school in california my freshman year, but is there any way i can explain that to admissions people??
some other details..hmm
white male
soccer, x-country
couple of clubs
community service (tutoring)
…i’m sort of lost on how to “discover” ECs..
thanks for your help

Apply to the UCs! They don’t look at freshman grades at all.

As for ECs - just find ways to make your involvement deeper. You already have passions (soccer, CC, tutoring), so find ways to get more involved in them.

i woud apply to Ucs but i really want to go to new england, just to try something new…
anyways whats the truth behind legacy?? does it help much?? my mother went there…(dartmouth)
also, if my freshman gpa was 3.3 that will just be factored into my GPAs for soph, junior, etc??
or do colleges see the weighted gpa only??
im confuseddd

one other thing… will colleges see my freshman year grades like “A, A-, B, etc”
or just “3.3”??
how will it look on the transcipts
i KNOW its important not to get too hung up over all this, but i can’t help it…

^ They’ll see your individual freshman grades.
Some schools weigh freshman grades more than others. All schools like to see an overall improvement in your grades.

okay, thanks…
but if i transferred schools after freshman year, how will those grades affect my class rank??

^ Hmmm…I don’t know.

It’s hard to say, but honestly, getting into a top school with those freshman grades will be hard. Most NE schools do look at them.

I can understand wanting something new, but hey, it never hurts to apply to the UCs – just in case. They may end up being the best option for you (high quality instituions + low costs + no consideration of freshman grades).

CA is a pretty diverse state anyway. Going to one of the more distant campuses would still offer novelty.

thanks for the input!
another question though…
will the combined GPA be freshman year + soph. year+ junior year, then just divided by 3?

in that case, if i keep up good grades, it would end up being 3.7 or something, UW

that isnt too bad…?

^^yeah its usually like that I think but you should talk to your GC because your school may have different way of dealing with grades from other schools or whatev
