I WILL CHANCE RIGHT BACK! Really low GPA...chances?

Hey, so I'm a senior and I go to a pretty competitive catholic school in NYC. I already submitted my apps, but i just need to mail my recommendations and transcripts. My Stats are really bad and I am really stressing over them. I swear, they're making my life a living hell.

I have no free/lunch periods. I am literally the only senior at my school that is doing this(out of a class of 250+) As for the first trimester, all of my grades were 85+, except for IB English, which I failed(I did not complete my Internal Assessment in time for the end of the marking period, so I was docked 30 points off my grade)

I wrote my application essay on a personal experience and my english teacher really loved it and said it was the best written essay out of my whole class.

I wrote a personal statement describing my reason for poor grades, which is because of the medical problems that I have(Hypersomnia, Hyperventilation, Paresthesia, and Panic Attacks). They are primarily happening due to the fact that I am very overweight and unhealthy. These disorders have caused me to be absent for many days of school.
Freshman Year:23 days
Sophomore Year: 42 days
Junior Year: 68 days

My Psychology teacher and Guidance Counselor wrote me very strong recomendations.

I am applying to:

Susquehanna University

Lynchburg College
Seton Hall University
Hartwick College
CUNY Hunter, Baruch, Brooklyn, CSI

I am really stressed out. Please, please help me!

What kind of help are you looking for? I don’t know these schools, but I can look a few up on collegeboard. You should plug in your numbers, and see “how you match up”.

Rider. Looks like you are right in the ballpark, and they admit 75% of applicants.

BTW, I went to a Catholic school in NYC! Good luck!

ah! thanks so much! I am constantly on that website and i’ve never noticed that “how do I stack up” button, haha.

The classes you took and are currently taking really impressed me. I see lots of advance placements plus you have leadership positions and roles in your activities which is also great. I know how you feel about the no study or resource period. I am graduating in a class of 366 students and most of them have the resource period I wish I have but unfortunately Anatomy is taking over my life. I am also the first generation going to college.

I don’t know much about the schools you are applying to but I know you have the right SAT scores for Rider, Seton Hall, and the CUNY’s. With a good college essay and resume, you probably are guaranteed acceptance.

Good Luck and hurry mail in the rest of your stuff before deadlines they are part of your app!!!

I don’t think your health “sob story” will help you much, since its technically your fault your overweight and unhealthy.

I’ve always heard that schools don’t want to hear excuses of why your grades are poor, even if it is medical. Schools want to hear about how you overcame obstacles and did not subcome to them.

@irislin123, thanks so much. i’m glad you understand that lol. and i will mail them in as soon as christmas break is over and school resumes.

@meteman and gardy24, it’s not a “sob story” if it is really affecting my life. And i did not just write about my medical conditions, but i also wrote about how I am trying to overcome them. Why dont you try and type/write an essay with Paresthesia attacking your hands. Try and stay up to study when you have hypersomnia, which forces my body to sleep for over 12+ hours a day. Don’t forget about the fact that it has decreased my potential of concentrating tremendously. why dont you try and take the daily commute to school around nyc with panic attacks and with buses packing people up like anchovies. not everyone can subcome medical disorders. If it was not for these disorders, I would’ve gotten a 2000+ on my SAT and probably a 3.5 gpa. Obviously my teachers would not place me into IB/AP classes if they thought i was not intelligent enough to do well in them. Yeah, maybe losing weight may have a chance to help me, but it is definitely not easy to do it, especially since my body is so used to eating unhealthy. If you were in my situation, then you would understand how much it affects my life.

I am actually somebody who used to be overweight and unhealthy and was able to get in shape and lose 50+ pounds so I know that’s possible.

I’m just telling you that schools may not look kindly on that story because they will be getting stories about students who were able to overcome health issues.

StarStunning, the point is, unless you can demonstrate how you have consistently overcome the obstacles, you are telling them it is out of your control with regard to whether you succeed in their environment.

You make it sound sound like trying to succeed in the stressful environment of college might be more of the same. You will still have to try and stay up and study, you will likely be packed in somewhere like anchovies ( I too, prefer those sardines!), and you will likely have to type papers with paresthesias.

You might get some accommodations if they have already proven helpful. Has that been the case?
