I will love you if you replay. I'm depressed. Relieve me of my false hope and misery.

EDIT. I feel like an idiot. I apologize for the spelling error; "replay"="reply"
I think I've been living a lie. Depressed. Relieve me of my false hope and misery.
COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY

EARLY DECISION. This has about 48-49% acceptance rate.
IN-STATE.

All this time I've been asking around, and people have told me I have a fair and possibly probable chance.

Yesterday I was looking through threads and I got very depressed. There were people apparently with 2300+ / 4.0+ getting rejected early decision?????? I don't know if I saw correctly, but this all depressed me. I'm depressed. I want to cry. I literally am putting all my hopes and effort into W&M. I'm doing everything I possibly can. I screwed up my GPA one year, but I'm doing everything in my power to fix it. Naturally, I'll continue applying to other schools in case I am declined from this dream school.

Please tell me. Am I relying on false hope of getting into W&M? Or do I actually have a fair or good chance? Please just slap it in my face. Uncensored. No restrain. Just the truth, and nothing but. Please.

SAT = 2060 // I've taken five tests out of the Official SAT Study Guide (Blue Book, 2nd ed.) and I've gotten 2310, 2200, 2240, 2220, 2230.
So I'm predicting/hoping something past 2200 on the real thing.

RANK = 127/452

GPA = 3.99

Teacher 2 = AP teacher. Well known figure. Harvard grad. Connections to Ivies too (and hopefully W&M). He really loves my writing. Has a reputation in the school for writing "amazing" recommendations. Has seen me be very outgoing and fun in class. He's had me rap in his classes several times; so he could make me sound like a fun kid to have on campus.

haha don’t worry about it bud! you’ll be fine. I had a 3.5 GPA and similar SATs, way less APs and even less extracurriculars. I was never the president of any clubs and only had a minor leadership position. and I got in as an out-of-state regular decision applicant

I believe if you submit your 1st semester senior year grades, you have a great shot. Don’t be depressed :slight_smile: I know this is a stressful time, but we’ll all make it no matter what happens! (I’m applying ED to W&M this year too).
P.S. That’s some great artwork!

@hacylon Thank you that was encouraging. I’ll keep working hard!
@Soccersara Thank you! Best of luck!

Can anyone else give input? Brutal honesty would be incredibly appreciated.

Brutal honesty? Ok - you have a wonderfully diverse resume, are clearly very talented, and you’d be a great addition to any school.

Brutal enough? :)

So, try to relax a bit, and just enjoy senior year. I truly think you’ll get in but even if I’m wrong, and you don’t, you’ll get into a great school.

So, try not to stress too much, you’ll be fine, whatever happens.

Best of luck!

You have a great record and will do fine in college admissions and in college itself. Please, please, please do not get hung up on the idea that there is a perfect school for you. There isn’t. There are many wonderful college in the US where you can get a splendid education and make wonderful friends. Maybe you will get into W&M and maybe you won’t. Everything will turn out fine even if you don’t get to attend W&M.

Listen to me. If you can do things now to help you gain confidence in your (actually quite wonderful!) self and improve your self esteem, you will be doing yourself a big favor. You have been working toward a place where your talents will thrive, and there isn’t one SINGLE place where this can happen – there are lots of places where you’d be a good fit. So fret not. Open your eyes and your mind. W&M is a great place, but life might hand you a different deal that could prove fortuitous on many fronts in a different geography. As fiddlecanoe says, “don’t get hung up” on one place. The answer is within you, and no matter where you go, make your own awesomeness!

Brutal honesty- how many hours do you have in a day to be an “active member” or President of so many clubs? What do you do as President of Harry PotterClub or Rubiks Cube Club?? I am really curious… (and everyone should remember, a lower grade in an AP course does mean the same thing as a low grade in an easier course - it just means you did not understand your limitations- challenge yourself, sure, but do not load up on AP classes because it makes you look like a stronger student)

Yea, this year I worked harder. I got 3 A+, 2 A, 1 A-, and 1 B.

A lot of the clubs in which I’m an “active member” have 1 meeting like every 2 weeks (if not more). And sometimes the meeting takes place during the school day in free period. Also, though I didn’t state it here, there are a few clubs here that aren’t 4 year dedications, rather 3 year dedications or maybe even 2. Harry Potter club is an example of that.

In HP club we just hold games, quidditch matches, do skits, read to children, make food, etc. It’s not meant to be taken seriously like Debate. It’s just supposed to reflect my quirky side to W&M.

Same goes for Rubik’s. We teach interested people how to solve the cube. Then we race one another, and keep close track of timings. And we try to take them to competitions whenever we can.

Contact the debate coach. W&M is a serious debate school - it can’t hurt, and might help. Good luck! :-)

How did you do on the AP tests?

So, did you hear from W&M last night? I’ve been thinking about you since I heard decisions are out.

I got deferred :confused: Now I’m stressed lol

Sorry about the deferral- did you read the explanations on the “Admitted/Deferred/Denied” site(link)? You should explore all of your other top choices and fall in love with a few other schools, along with W&M… Your list of other schools is quite diverse and all are great schools. Do not stress (and don’t “try so hard” to impress admissions-> which leads to more stress). Focus & Relax

It’s cool. Now I’m going to apply to other schools full out. I have a feeling my junior year will haunt me during this admissions process. I don’t think most colleges will be very forgiving for a junior year splattered with Bs and Cs, just because 1 semester (that is hopefully my senior year grades are consistent for the rest of this semester) shows otherwise. I’d really like to avoid having to apply transfer though in the future.

“haunt” may be a bit strong, but it is often times the case that a bad year can derail an application at very competitive schools. Keep up the good work this year and maybe have an outside- source look at your common app. Although a plethora of activities can demonstrate involvement (+), it can also be a (-)… “did applicant become too involved and his academics suffered?”. Overcoming adversity is remarkable, but one usually finds that everyone has had some obstacle which had the potential to derail them… (divorce, parent lost their job, hurricane, sibling ill, etc). Just be careful how you present yourself-

@PhDbeenthere Thank you for being so frank with me in terms of advice. It’s fantastic advice and I really appreciate it. I’ll be working hard!

You are welcome Mr… I am a college professor and spend a great deal of time counseling high school students and parents. Your posts struck a chord and you “read” like a great (and quirky) kid. I was looking for info on the site about W&M (my son had just applied ED) and stumbled upon your posts …

Mr… Hang in there. We 'talked ’ about this, right? That’s they’d see potential and want to see how your sr year grades come in first semester? But, what other schools are on your radar? CNU has a strong transfer relationship with W&M I’m told. Mary Washington as well is supposed to be linked. Either of those should be close to sure things.

You’re going to be fine. Hang in there, and don’t give up hope. There’s still a chance you’ll be accepted later on! And look on the bright side, I can absolutely guarantee that you’ll end up where you’re supposed to end up. The college chooses the person just like the wand chooses the wizard; it has to be a perfect fit. Believe in your strengths. Believe. In the meantime, keep up the good work.
