I think I've been living a lie. Depressed. Relieve me of my false hope and misery.

COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY

EARLY DECISION. This has about 48-49% acceptance rate.
IN-STATE.

All this time I've been asking around, and people have told me I have a fair and possibly probable chance.

Yesterday I was looking through threads and I got very depressed. There were people apparently with 2300+ / 4.0+ getting rejected early decision?????? I don't know if I saw correctly, but this all depressed me. I'm depressed. I want to cry. I literally am putting all my hopes and effort into W&M. I'm doing everything I possibly can. I screwed up my GPA one year, but I'm doing everything in my power to fix it.

Please tell me. Am I relying on false hope of getting into W&M? Or do I actually have a fair or good chance? Please just slap it in my face. Uncensored. No restrain. Just the truth, and nothing but. Please.

SAT = 2060 // I've taken five tests out of the Official SAT Study Guide (Blue Book, 2nd ed.) and I've gotten 2310, 2200, 2240, 2220, 2230.
So I'm predicting/hoping something past 2200 on the real thing.

RANK = 127/452

GPA = 3.99

Recommendations =
Teacher 1 = Debate coach. Known me for 4 years. Should be great. Has seen me grow up.

Teacher 2 = AP teacher. Well known figure. Harvard grad. Connections to Ivies too (and hopefully W&M). He really loves my writing. Has a reputation in the school for writing "amazing" recommendations. Has seen me be very outgoing and fun in class. He's had me rap in his classes several times; so he could make me sound like a fun kid to have on campus.

I’m seriously concerned guys. Please tell me the truth. If you think I can’t make it, please just tell me. I know I wrote a lot, but it’d mean so much to me if you’d look through it and help me out. I’ll chance back, but please give me honest full answers.

Come on guys…273 views? Not one of you will help me?

I think you should have a solid chance. Good scores, the only thing that may hurt you is your rank and junior year grades. If your essays and recs are as good as you say they are, then that will help tons. Try to narrow your ECs to a few that you really show dedication in. By that I mean, don’t include the ones where you are just an “active member,” but instead elaborate on the president/founder/etc of clubs.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1393360-some-chances-please-i-chance-back.html

Relax
You’re fine

You have a good load of ECs but W&M seems like a match in ED for your in-state situation.

Perhaps the ones rejected with 2300+/4.0+ were out-of-state… Then again, perhaps they had weak ECs too.

Thanks to all who responded.
Are you guys sure?
Everyone else please respond. I will chance you back. Be brutally honest.

The 48-49% admission rate is, alas, your odds of getting into W&M.

It could go either way, your junior year grades were not great. You have a valid reason for the grade drop which will help.

On my additional information document on the common app
I want to include

In depth table of my ECs (awards, leaderships, other ECs not mentioned)

GPA drop explanation

Sample artwork I’ve created. Paintings, sketches, etc.
This includes a really detailed and nice (I’d like to think so at least) oil painting of the Crim Dell. I’ll label it as Crim Dell of course. I hope this channels my dedication through my art ability. I am purposefully putting this on the additional info on the common app so that the ADMISSIONS people see it as opposed to just the art faculty (if i do a portfolio instead).

I plan on submitting an art portfolio (but it won’t be potent because i dont have art teachers to get recs from and I never went on exhibitions).

Thank you Catria and Artgirl very much.

Everyone,

Could my art help potentially boost my chances guys?

Are my chances overall as grave as I suspected?

The inclusion of a portfolio is more beneficial at some schools then others. I have spoken with all my top choices about including a portfolio and they have encouraged me to, though I also go to a school for creative and performing arts where I major in visual art and have been in some small shows/won awards.

Generally the procedure for art supplements is that they are sent to the visual art department and evaluate it. Personally I think the Crim Dell is a bit much (I am assuming it is their crest or something like that). Speaking as somebody who has studied portfolio development I doubt it will be a strong piece, though it may be technically strong it will not be strong in concept and will probably clash with the flow of the rest of your portfolio. Also it (at least to me) comes across as desperate.

You’ve absolutely got a shot. Your grades in 11th grade aren’t exactly sterling, but you’re taking Straight AP’s both last year and this year. With a roughly 50% acceptance rate, I wouldn’t expect to get in, but I wouldn’t expect rejection either. You’re definitely a possibility

@ArtsyGirl Crim Dell is isn’t a crest or anything. It’s a scenic pond overlooked by a bridge, which is at the campus. I’d link you to the painting that I made, but it’ll probably get deleted off before you see it. They apparently don’t allow links being posted.

Thanks for your response Kbronx!

Any other opinions? Can somoene who may have EDed into the College give me some input?

You need to talk to your guidance counselor as to what the experience has been for students like you from that school, in light of the grade drop. From what I have seen, you will not get accepted ED from a drop like that Junior year, but if you shore up your grades senior year, you would be seriously considered . THat has been a pattern I have seen with any number of schools. Most kids with a drop in junior year like that are not good ED/EA candidates. Also, how did you do on your AP exams? What were the scores?

I can tell you two things, if this helps.

At my D’s HS, the average GPA and SAT for students admitted to W&M is: 4.17 and 2150.

Don’t.

Plan for the “what if.”

Ever hear the expression: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket?”

@cptofthehouse

My AP exam scores were too bad to show. Trust me.

This will be harsh but you know you will have to put your low gpa on the app. I know 3.99 was wighted.

Sent from my iPhone using CC

Guys I really do appreciate harsh/critical responses. I just want the truth. Do you think I’d get in? Do you think I won’t? Or could it go either way?

Anyone? Be as harsh as necessary.
