I will not file a tax return, how do I fill out the CSS?

I will not file a tax return, how do I fill out the CSS?
I am not going to file a tax return, since the money I earned was not much.
I am fine when I fill in the fafsa, because they asked me about the "income"
The problem is in CSS, the whole part of SI is asking "according to tax return 1040... how much you put in line37" or something like this.
So, in fact I earned not much, also, I will not have any tax return let me follow!
What should I do?

And I don't understand why a friend of mine have 4 questions in this part but I have 7 questions?

another problem is I can't wait until my W2 form come, teh deadline is on Feb.1.

You can fill out the tax form, even if you don’t file it.

You can probably use your last paystub if you don’t have your W2, it generally has all the same information. Might get tricky if you have any pre-tax deductions, depending on what they put on your paystub.

Thank You to notrichenough.

Some of the questions are like these:

Enter your 2010 adjusted gross income from your 2010 IRS Form 1040, line 37. SI-105A

Enter the income tax you paid for 2010 from your 2010 IRS Form 1040, line 55. SI-110A

Enter the amount of 2010 education credits (American Opportunity, Hope, and Lifetime Learning) that you claimed on your 2010 IRS Form 1040, line 49. SI-115A

Enter the amount of your itemized deductions for 2010 from your 2010 IRS Schedule A, line 29. Enter “0” (zero) if you did not itemize deductions.

I am confused since I have no form 1040 to look at.

Do you mean I can add up all the salary and then put it on adjusted gross income ?

One of my frined is lucky, she said that she has only 4 questions, and those questions have no mention about her tax form, but only ask about her income.

“You can fill out the tax form, even if you don’t file it.” Is that means I can just guess and then fill in ?

What I meant was, get hold of form 1040 (it is on line for free, at [Internal Revenue Service](http://www.irs.gov) ), and fill it out as if you were going to file it.

If you are not filing, the answer to #3 and #4 from above is zero. #2 is probably zero unless you had income tax (not FICA) withheld from your paycheck (in which case you should be filing to get it refunded).

For #1, you can probably just add up your salary, but it depends on whether you had any other income during the year such as interest from a bank account, made an IRA contribution, etc.

You probably only need to fill in the first page of the 1040, and it will probably be very simple. You could try one of the on-line services that let you do your taxes for free.

Are you the parent? If you are the student are you independent for financial aid? If you are the student are your parents helping you? If you are the student you do realize that like the FAFSA, the profile will require parent information so you will need that information also. notrichenough is correct, you can put a “dummy” tax form together on line which should help to navigate you through the Profile. Whether you are the student or the parent and have time do contact your employer and see if they can’t get your W-2 somehow it will help greatly.

mandy, I see that u r 18, so I will assume you are a student and you live with 1 of your parents. Both FAFSA and CSS ask for parents and students info. Your parents need to help you fill out their section, There will be lots of questions based on their tax returns, For you, if you dont have a job , you will put lots of zeros in for your section and say that you dont plan to file. My son has no job, $20 in his piggybank, and thats about it. So it made for a very easy time to complete his part of the form. The parents part is a lot more detailed, especially for the CSS. If you dont have W2, look at your last paystub for last year. Most of the info you will need is on there. Ask your parents to help you!

I’m still very confused…OP you said you had no trouble filling out the FAFSA, if you are 18 as the previous poster speculated… then your custodial parent or both parents would have had to report their finances on the FAFSA? If they did this then you should have most if not all the information to fill out the Profile? Are you applying to more than one school that requires Profile? Yes, absolutely it sounds like you need parent help here.

I am a high school student. I have talked to my parents, I am almost done with the parents portion, but this Student’s 2010 Income and Benefits is really annoying!
how do they know if I have job before and then keep asking me the questions form 1040!!!

Here are the following questions in SI:
Enter the income you earned from work in 2010 from your 2010 IRS Form 1040, lines 7, 12, and 18 and IRS Schedule K-1 (Form 1065), box 14. If lines 12 or 18 are negative, treat them as zero. SI-125A
Enter the amount of taxable dividend and interest income you earned in 2010 as reported on your 2010 IRS Form 1040, lines 8a and 9a. SI-135A
Enter the amount of any other untaxed income you received in 2010. Worksheet SI-160A
Enter the amount of 2010 AmeriCorps earnings you reported or expect to report to the IRS in your adjusted gross income. SI-165B

I think I will look at the 1040 form and them estimate it.

THANK YOU ALL OF YOU.

I am NOT a tax expert but here are my suggestions…check with someone to see if I’m accurate.

Did you just earn income from a job? If so, that amount should be on your LAST pay stub from the year…look for “year to date” and enter the amount you were paid. You probably didn’t DO schedule K

Do you have a bank account or any other accounts that earn interest? Again…look at the last statement you got at the end of December…it will show you the interest you earned for the year.

Did you HAVE any other untaxed income? If not…enter $0

Did you work for Americorps in 2010? If not, enter $0.

So, I earned like $1000, and I don’t have bank account or any other income.
I am gonna put the 1000 in the the #1 and #5 and 0 for all of the rest?

1) Enter your total number of exemptions for 2010 from your 2010 IRS Form 1040, line 6d. SI-100A

2) Enter your 2010 adjusted gross income from your 2010 IRS Form 1040, line 37. SI-105A

3) Enter the income tax you paid for 2010 from your 2010 IRS Form 1040, line 55. SI-110A
Enter the amount of 2010 education credits (American Opportunity, Hope, and Lifetime Learning) that you claimed on your 2010 IRS Form 1040, line 49. SI-115A
4) Enter the amount of your itemized deductions for 2010 from your 2010 IRS Schedule A, line 29. Enter “0” (zero) if you did not itemize deductions. SI-120A
5) Enter the income you earned from work in 2010 from your 2010 IRS Form 1040, lines 7, 12, and 18 and IRS Schedule K-1 (Form 1065), box 14. If lines 12 or 18 are negative, treat them as zero. SI-125A
6) Enter the amount of taxable dividend and interest income you earned in 2010 as reported on your 2010 IRS Form 1040, lines 8a and 9a. SI-135A
7) Enter the amount of any other untaxed income you received in 2010. Worksheet SI-160A
8) Enter the amount of 2010 AmeriCorps earnings you reported or expect to report to the IRS in your adjusted gross income.

Also, in the beginning of SI, it said " This section asks for information about the student’s (and the student’s spouse’s, if married) income and benefits. Any time a question says “you” or “your” it is referring to the student (and student’s spouse’s, if married). If a question does not apply, enter “0” (zero). "

Is that means if I am not gonna to file any tax return, I can put 0 into all blanks?

Thanks a lot!!!

I’m going to talk about YOUR income only as I’m going to assume you are NOT married and therefore have NO SPOUSE.

It doesn’t matter whether you plan to file a tax return or not. You are still REQUIRED to put your income on the FAFSA form. So if you earned $1000 you have to put $1000 NOT ZERO…

To all of u: Thank you for helping me!!
