I wonder if admissions might be slightly more competitive this year?

Last year had one of the largest freshman classes ever. With more students accepting admission than normally do. I wonder if this will cause admissions to be more selective or hold off accepting lower stat students until they hear back from higher stat applicants.

This happened last year with UDel. The year before they had more freshman accept than normally do. So the year after. They held back (wait listed) some applicants until April or May. So depending on how many kids accepted admission is who they sent acceptances to.

Doubt it. Penn State is much more larger than UDel.

@hasannadeem47 How does that prove that admissions won’t be more competitive? Wouldn’t being larger mean that things like housing are already very competitive and adding more students would be a bad thing?

Aren’t they building a new form for freshman? East halls are getting renovated

They are, but what I think the OP is talking about here -and that some might not be aware of if they are new - is that Penn State started using a new system last year and in error they accepted many more than they wanted for freshman year. They even offered accepted students large amounts of money to start at a commonwealth campus instead because of the dearth of housing for these freshmen. So, that being said, that very large freshman class will be sophomores next year so the question is, will they accept less than they usually do? Last year was an outlier. It will certainly be more competitive than last year if the same number of students apply. The question is, will it be more competitive than the years prior to last year since they now have more people on campus than they expected. I think housing for sophomores and upper classmen will be more competitive regardless…

The university has already said that this next freshman class, will of necessity be smaller than the overly large incoming freshman class this year. But every year they say that, and I have yet to see a significant drop. So, there may be a couple hundred fewer spots, but not a giant drop. Relax, everyone. It’s only October
