This perhaps is a naive post, but...

I'm not the outdoorsy type of person. I do enjoy running outside and playing basketball, but I'm not into nature or anything. I'm worried that I won't fit in because of this. I like intramural basketball (I hope to make it a major EC) and outside street ball. I'm certainly open to trying to convert into an outdoor kind of guy, but I hope that Dartmouth has students who lie in the same boat as mine...?

Oh my gosh you have no need to worry. The Dartmouth Outing Club is very active and popular, but by no means are the majority of students super outdoorsy. Besides my freshmen DOC trip, I've never done any activity with the DOC club. All those other clubs (like debate groups, political groups, issue groups, ethnic groups, etc) still exist and are very active.

The biggest difference you should consider is that Dartmouth is out in the wilderness. This contributes to a very tight-knit campus and lots of school spirit. But you won't be going shopping or clubbing in the city very often. Make sure to keep that in mind.

You certainly have the right attitude though! Nobody will expect you to be a nature-loving hippy, but you should definitely take advantage of your surroundings while you are there at least once or twice. There are so many things to do that aren't too intense. Try skiing as a PE elective. Or maybe, rent a Dartmouth-owned cabin on a lake (for free, i believe), for the weekend. (there are ones with plumbing/electricity)

I didn't do a DOC trip... and I don't do the exercise thing a lot.

You really don't have to worry on that end.

I'd say a great majority of the campus isn't "outdoorsey". While there's lots of casual fun outside (snowball fights, bbqs, etc) its still a campus and that means a lot of on campus activity. Not a concern at all.

I would highly recommend a DOC trip, however, regardless of your love of the outdoors. Its just critical in making strong friendships off the bat. I'm still best friends with some of my DOC trippies 10 years later.
