I wrote a short story for Chicago supplement...

And although it was a "short" story it was still over a thousand words long, with offensive language, crass content, and writing of questionable quality.

Do I still have a shot? Anyone want to take a look at it?

Then why, might I ask, did you submit it?

The length and the decision to use a short story will not be a problem. The things evertheoptimist pointed out will be a problem.

I personally didn’t think it was very good, but everyone I showed it to said it was a great story and that I should submit it. I wouldn’t have submitted it if I had the time/stamina to write another one.

u could be bold without using offensive language

also, what prompt was this for?
for some prompts, a short story could be OK (I forget the uchicago extended prompts, was it something like caught; outgrow; injustice laws; game theory; w/e?)

personally i think when people write a short story, they’re trying too hard to be a maverick(lol)

instead, you can write unconventionally in a conventional format

if that makes any sense

then again, I’m not the one that’ll be making the decisions, but i’ll read it if u want lol

Sure, I would love some feedback. I’ll PM it to you.

I wrote a rap for my EC essay

*not Chicago. just common app

I wrote a short story for my Chicago essay and I got in. :)

There are no problems with using crass or vulgar language – so long as it improves the story, theme, point, or setting.

Say one is to write a story about the realistic deep south, it is impossible to have a story go without at least some cultural bearings. Though whether these bearings are in the form of undertones, to blatant racial derrogatives remain the responsibility of the author. The author is to decide what would give the story the greatest impression.

Some people confuse saltiness and shock with proggresive or ingenuitive writing. Can it be funny? Sure. Can it be shocking? Possibly. But what is the difference between pshychological shock and blatant in-your-face oppressivness? Between attemps at pure humerous audacity (Gopher balls) and a new intelligent or non-intelligent way of looking at a common object or situation with humerous results?

Author’s Discretion is Advised.

I would like to see this.

I wrote a short story for my essay and I’m a current student now. and i think that as long as the “crassness” is necessary for the story, it should be fine.

I wrote a short story that i thought was brilliant (like the best thing i’ve written in my life) at the time and began with a block quote from The Wasteland and alluded to western underworld myths. Looking back now, it was utter crap: a combination of my personal anxieties of the time with the western journey after death trope. But I still got in.

Personally, i think if the cursing serves a purpose, you’ll be fine
