It doesn't cost extra to stay in the dorms during IAP.

Most people, but not all people, choose to stay on campus during IAP. I guess if I had to guess a number, I'd say about three-quarters of students choose to stay.

The PE classes offered during IAP this year will likely not be decided for sure until later. They will almost certainly offer the most popular classes (aerobics, kickboxing, yoga, table tennis, aquatics classes, pilates, ice skating), but some of the more obscure classes aren't offered all the time. A list of classes which might be offered is here.

There are not that many normal 12-unit courses offered during IAP. Mostly there are classes continued from fall semester (18.01A, 8.01L), language classes (Spanish I, French I, German I), and 6-unit or 3-unit fun classes. A list of for-credit offerings from last year is here.

So as an incoming freshman, I have no idea whether or not I'm doing IAP because winter vacation would be cut short to 2 weeks. Would you say that 3/4 of freshman choose to stay as well?

What some current students told the incoming '10 students at a local welcome gathering here last weekend was that probably a larger percentage of freshmen stick around for IAP than returning students, and one even said he thought IAP was geared towards freshmen anyway. (That didn't seem true to me, based on what I've read and heard, but that was his impression.)

I would think that freshmen might want to go home for a little longer, but I guess that's not true... I might just stay home longer to avoid the January snow :)

thx so much! any research opportunity open during the IAP?

of course.

Screw it. I'm going home for relaxation and sunlight. (and skiing ;-) )

My son has gone back for IAP both years. First year he took a physics course, and hated seeing everyone else having fun, although he was glad he got that course out of the way. This year he took a skiing PE class and started a new UROP (which he continued spring semester and is doing this summer as well). He had a lot more fun the second year.

Most of his high school friends got home a week before he did and went back to school about the time IAP started, so they wouldn't have been home even if he had stayed here.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out during IAP.....fun stuff.....

So, do you stay in the same dorm (and room) during IAP, or can you choose another dorm (or room)?

You live in the room which is your assigned spring term room -- if you are staying in your dorm, you will stay in the same room, but if you are moving after a semester to another dorm (which some people do), you will move during IAP.
