Hello all. I'm currently a sophomore and next year I'll be going into a full IB diploma program at my school. We get to choose a sixth subject elective of either IB Art or IB Econ. I have no idea which one to choose. I want to go to a top-notch university (I mean who doesn't!?) and I want to study either architecture or urban planning (with a concentration in Transportation) and at the moment I'm leaning more towards planning. My question is this: I can see the benefits and problems that I would get with taking either class, but I don't really know which one would be better in preparation for going to school for architecture or urban planning. So...could you all offer me some comments, concerns, other advice about this decision? Thanks!

What are your other IB Courses like? Since I don’t recommend IB Art without some previous art classes… just because.

For Group 6… you really can replace Art with another subject you’d prefer. I’d say go with Econ.

Talk to both instructors and decide what option would be best for you.

Generally, if you haven’t prior experience or motivation to commit hours to Art, I recommend Econ. As a IB student currently enrolled in HL Visual Arts, I would also observe the stricter grading standards between the two levels. There is a notebook/research/sketchbook requirement in addition to the actual art pieces.

Although the projects are time-consuming and somewhat tedious, it has been a relatively enjoyable process. Being in the class has introduced me to classmates who are creative, quirky, smart and very talented. I don’t regret enrolling, and the class has really pushed me to manage my time better…especially now that it’s March, when the IB portfolio is being finalized!

After April, I’m not sure what comes up, maybe a showcase, but it should get easier from here. Feel free to PM!

MIThopeful16: I’m taking HL English, HL History of the Americas, and HL Math, plus SL Physics, SL French, and then SL of whichever sixth subject I choose.

topramennbaklava: I’m planning to talk with the teachers soon. Also, I was wondering if it would be possible to do something with photography. Isn’t the whole point of your portfolio to present an issue through the art-form of your choosing?

Thanks!

Photography or not, your portfolio should be a strong case. Since you’re considering Visual Arts SL, I think you may be fine. The grading standards are more flexible; be sure to ask if your teacher if could explain the difference between option A or B for SL students, if she knows about this…then you are in good hands!
