IB Diploma students....

gosh how many subjects does an average student take when they do IB?
u guys seem to be doing a lot... lol

you have to do 6 subjects, some overachievers do 7 lol

At my school it's seven by default -- six IB courses and one elective (mine is journalism).

5 HL's would be NUTS!

I've known people who took the SL class, but took the HL exam by special permission from the IB coordinators and the teacher.

I hope all of you grauate with 40+!

Parent of 2 who are doing IB at all-IB school. Do any of you IBers also do varsity athletics? Since it is an all-IB school and this is the US, we must field athletic teams, so >50% of kids regulalrly have 2 hr practices on top of IB workload.

Our school will NOT let you take more than 3 HLs past fall of Jr yr, because they want you to max your score and GPA.

Does this grading scale make sense to you ppl? It is more or less what our school does.

A= 6,7
B=5
C=4,3
D=2
F=1

Any anecdotal evidence of what top tier univs/lacs look for in terms of IB score? I know most give credit/adv place for HL 6/7s, but what about overall? Yes, I know IB score is not given until July after grad, but school can/should est scores by using pre-test in fall sr yr.

I do basketball on a team not affiliated with my school, if that counts. It's >4 hours a week and works great for the Action part of CAS.

And I have 4 higher levels because it's quite easy to do Finnish B when Finnish is your mother tongue.

OMG - you actually get CAS hours for sport participation?

At our school, CAS is STRICTLY community service or particpating in an open house or something where the school needs volunteers to staff an event open to the community.

My school only lets us take 3 HLs. With all the work and other things going on, they don't think there is enough time to warrant more than 3 highers.

I play 2-3 Varsity Sports a year. At times it can be rough, balancing work with sport. Especially since the teams travel around Europe we have to be careful not to miss IB deadlines.

Generally a score above 38 points is considered good. That's a baseline for top UK universities.

indydukie: My school is all-IB as well, and we do have varsity sports teams... I'm not involved, but the people who are seem to manage, somehow.

For us the grading scale goes as follows:

7 = A+
6 = A-
5 = B
4 = C
<4 = F

...it's pretty harsh.

Pretty similar to ours then. Our foreign teachers are the hardest, French/Spanish language grading is IMPOSSIBLE in our grade-inflated world. Our school's counselors will advise going for certificate(s) if more than one subject looks to be <4. Not failure, but recognition that some students (it's not a gifted or magnet school) may not be IB DP material.
We had 2nd grad class in '05 11/13 pass w/range 27-36. 4 bilingual DPs

I'm taking French A1, which means that my French class follows the same basic curriculum as my English class (World Lit papers, orals, and all), with the same expectations in regard to quality of writing. Apart from me, two people in my class are attempting it; the others are taking either Language B or A2. It's a bit intimidating! :eek:

ya I agree french gradeing is pretttyyy touggghhhh.my teacher is maddd! If i miss like a single accent i go down a whole grade!

HL's: Eng a1,econ,hist,bio
SL's: Math ,french B,Spanish B

I do some varsity sports among other things, it was really hard to manage at first but the key is in craming , time management, and when all else fails stay up till all hours of the night and drink lots of red bull and coffee - i think ill prolly stop everything during march/april though...
i was only allowed to get 20 cas hours for those things since im not "helping the community"...but i was so angrey when i found out that WE DONT EVEN GET A SINGLE POINT FOR CAS!! sigh..
so anyone get their predicteds yet?

Hls: math, economics, english A2
Sl:business and management, Spanish A1,physics

Its really all about time management, opportunity costs basicly. I had tyo give up going to the Gym every day and limiting it to 2 or 3 times during school nights and always on sundays. Just find a way to abalcne things out, I have more or less a lot of ECs:
mondays:knowledge bowl; tuesdays: tutoring kids from poor schools, wensdays: HMUN and german lessons ( 3 hrs), thursdays: internship at the bank, fridays: vollibol, saturdays: guitar lessons and my own band

ive just handed my two year's worth of CAS in. BTW, sport can be counted...it counts for the action part of CAS. Just like how I had piano lessons for my creativity even though im not helping anyone. You only need to do community service for the SERVICE part. Although i think there's a large discrepancy b/w IB schools for CAS. like in my school, we have to keep periodic journals and stuff, but for other schools they dont...

we have a new IB coordinator at school this year and he's saying only sports for Action...yikes, i NEVER do sports. maybe will start yoga....

Well I am taking

HL: Math, Physics, Chemistry
SL: Business Management, English A1, Russian
Electives (Non-IB): Economics, Yearbook

I wish I could have taken 4 higher level, but my school won't let me to do so. Pretty amazing that there are actually lots of schools that offer 4 higher level.

Anyways, as you can see roughly, I am aiming for MIT and perhaps Harvard. But got 1 year left before the application process. I wish I could post a very good stat a year later..lol

my CAS coordinator counts mooting/debating as action too

or tht could be 'creativity' i think.., id say almost all activities can be catogorized under creativity-using the mind, action- moving a lot/sports etc. and service-helping ppl,

mooting? is this a verb?

At my school (in Bucharest, Romania), one girl and one guy are taking 7 IB Subjects, 3 of them at higher and there are a few taking 6 IB Subjects, 4 of which are higher. Nobody so far in our history (that I know of) HAS taken 7 IB Subjects, 4 of them higher. This year, however, a LOT of 11th graders are taking French B SL anticipated in May 2005.

Sports - either Varsity, JV or such as independent working out - counts as Action in the CAS requirements. However, for those not inclined or able to do sports, you can help "lift/carry" things. Backstage work can also count as Action for plays. It's harder, though, for Creativity cause it's just the one/two play(s) a year and concerts so if you're not talented (and we're a small school so those who ARE talented get first pick at roles) getting creative hours is a real hassle.

Highers: English A1, Biology, Chemistry, History-European History
Standards: Math Methods, Spanish Ab Initio
