Hi, I'm in my first year of IB (International Baccalaureate) and would like some advice as to which courses to pursue my Higher Levels in.

My school requires students to HL in English and History, so thats two down, one (or two...) to go. I was wondering as to whether HL in Math or Physics, both classes I will take next year regardless of which level I test in.

I'm fairly confident in my math ability, and a 5 on Math HL should be attainable fairly reasonably, with a 6 possible with work. Physics is the required science at my high school, so that would be my other possible HL. Perhaps I should take both?

Both of these subjects I should be able to get a 7 on the SL tests, based on my performance last year and teacher feedback.

My schedule would be as follows:

This year:
ITGS SL

Next year:
English HL
History HL
Math HL?
Physics HL?
Chinese SL <- ORM's ftw
And TOK of course.

My high school is top 20 in the nation, extremely competitive. 4.0 gpa, 1/300-ish class rank.

We prefer to see HLs in math/sci. If your school requires you to take HLs in english and history, you should a) take at least one other (two if possible) in math or sci and b) have your guidance counselor tell us about it in their letter. You might also pursue an EE in math.sci.

Hi daem0n. I’m a second year student doing IB, and I’m very glad that you’re thinking about this now; during your 1st year.

I am personally taking Math, Physics and English as my highers. I had some doubts about whether taking Physics or Chemistry as higher, but I finally took Physics and never regret it. If you like math, if you like patterns, then you’ll probably not want to have Chemistry as your higher. Of course, Physics higher is hard sometimes, but at least is interesting and you will enjoy studying it (at least I do). I’ve done my EE in math, and I really suggest to take it higher if you do not want your math classes to be very boring.

SL:
IB Econ SL - Expected 7
IB English SL - Expected 6-7
IB French SL B - Expected 5-6
I did an EE in Chem/Physics with successful results and added an abstract of it to my MIT Application.

Isn’t this the most MIT could possibly expect me to do w/ IBDP?
