IB Language Class Help!

My take is that it is b/c it is a more self-selecting group. The percentile scores for the Nov test are restricted to the Nov test takers. The w/o listening exams are factored across the multiple sittings for the yr. If you compare the numbers of test takers, it is very different. Spanish w/listening=7,794 total Spanish w/o listening=34,491

Yes. Most students avoid the “listening” tests like the plague, unless they’re used to hearing the language. I’m not sure why! But this, I think, will be confirmed by all/most foreign language teachers!

Hindi is not something she anticipates needed in any future endeavor.

We/she have pursued it because of a desire for her to be fluent in at least one language from India. It is part of her being culturally literate in both of her parents’ cultures.

She is targeting (realistically I believe) the top American colleges and universities.

She would prefer to switch to Spanish or French ab initio for IB.

Thank you for all the input!!

Switching to Spanish or French may make sense for her interests and may be better for her long term goals if she wants to stay in the US or travel to countries other than India…

However, it may have a disadvantage in the short term for college admissions, since US universities will likely see ab initio as just level 2 of foreign language, rather than level 4+ for language B SL or HL (unless the current Hindi course is indicated as a level higher than 2).

Actually ab initio covers language up to A2 so level 3 or 4, which is why I said the courses sounded more college-paced than hs paced.
As previously indicated Hindi for igcse is equivalent to level4(if the student get a D or E) or Ap.
In any case, Ops daughter has a native language ( Kannada I think) or language of daily use AND English AND Hindi above hs Level 3 or 4 so being trilingual beats any us hs Level. The language ab initio would only be a cherry on the cake.

Reply, actually, no other native language other than English. Father’s mother tongue is not known by my daughter. So only Hindi and English.

Doesn’t she understand the language spoken in shops and daily life? ( Just wondering I’d she may not know more than you think like many expat kids who pick up the surrounding language - exception somewhat if kept “on base”)
In any case, Hindi igcse + ab initio = two foreign languages with one at B1 minimally and one optimally A2= no worry foe colleges.

We live in a major city. The language of daily life is English, or Kannada, or Tamil, or Telugu, or Hindi. Everyone around us regardless of educational level or social level speaks numerous languages. We don’t live in an expat enclave. But the reality in this city is that you do not need to know the local language even to shop in local shops. Makes it a much easier adjustment for the people from around the world who come here!

Thank you for all your input and advice!

Perhaps a more practical assessment of where your daughter is with respect to Hindi: how well can your daughter interact with other Hindi speakers, read things written in Hindi, write in Hindi, etc.?

If an assessment of her Hindi level is at all something you are interested in, look into http://www.languagetesting.com/find-a-test I’m not sure how it works for Hindi bc we looked into it for a different language. From what we understand, the testing can be done anywhere there is access to a computer with a video cam. They monitor via video feed during the testing.

It is affiliated with ACTFL (American Council of Teaching Foreign Languages) and rates according to the levels used by US universities. https://www.profluentplus.com/learn-about-test-rating (Our dd’s levels have been evaluated according the CEFR A/B levels and language depts here do not seem to like that system. We have been told by more than one modern language dept that they want students rated according to ACTFL ratings.). The test for multiple languages is $115 (but Hindi isn’t listed in that list.) It might be worth contacting them and asking about Hindi.

If she can achieve any intermediate level, it would definitely be worth her time. Goodness, some college dept goals are mid/high intermediate.
