I am currently an IBDP year 1 student so I'm a junior. I plan on studying computer science when i go to college and since most of the good British universities require math HL I'm considering it. I am kind of good at math SL, i get grades between 6-7 out of 7, but the thing is I'm scared of math HL because I heard a LOT about how tough it is, so I want to know your opinions on the matter :) Thanks :D

I’m a parent of an IB diploma graduate. I think it totally depends on your school, and who is teaching IB HL. If you have done that well in math SL, you will probably do fine in HL assuming you won’t end up with an extraordinarily bad teacher.

Pass rate for HLs in my school:
100% History HL
100% English HL
83% Biology HL
78% Chemistry HL
83% Psychology HL
47% Math HL

That pretty much tells the story.

I’m in math HL now and I know plenty of people who have passed, but only a few who have gotten 6’s and 7’s. Like another poster said, it depends on your teacher and how well he/she preps you for the test. Besides calculus, there are contest-level math problems in algebra, statistics, lots of vectors and matrices. You need to be good overall in math and problem solving and work for it. SL math is a far-cry from HL, but if you’re doing well in math now, I think you’ll be fine for the HL exam. Many of the vector, statistics, and matrices problems taught in SL carry over to complex problem solving in HL.

Oh, and on a side note, you’re from the UK? that’s cool.

Thanks everyone and no I’m not actually from the UK, but I do plan on going to college / university there ^^

Yeah don’t stress too much about math HL, I’m also a year one student, everyone always used to exaggerate how difficult HL was. Don’t stress about it.
