IB student in germany with a problem.

Hi,

I am an IB student in Germany near Berlin and I am interested to try my chance on applying myself for the MIT.
I am a native speaker and my parents work here for professional reasons.

The problem I got is that in a week or 2 I am about to enter the school and just a few days ago I found out about their curriculum.

The only science subjects they got is Biology at HL and Mathematics on SL.

The reason I write this thread is that just a few days ago after messing around with all the MIT admission pages I read about the requirements and it said that I need 3 science subjects. It said it is not strictly needed but recommended.

I do not have a problem to learn Physics and Chemistry autodidactically, but I guess Chemistry and Physics need more applied work than Biology, hence I guess Biology would be the most suitable subject for self-learner efforts.

I am still not sure what I will study at college but I am very interested in Genetics and Bio-Medics in general. But I am still not sure, since my interests are very broad and scattered through out the science spectrum

I know that I would have to find a place to do my TOEFL and SAT tests.

After some googling I found out about AP courses but I still do not know what exactly that is.

I hope some experienced people can help me out.

Thank you in advance!

EDIT:

I just talked with the headmaster today and he said that I MAY be able to take Biology for the IB degree and Physics or Chemistry additionally with the “Abitur”(thats the regular German High School K-12(Class 11 and 12) degree).

With other words I will do both the Abitur AND the IB.

The thing is that I have an appointment with him next week and I am not sure IF I can take Biology for for my IB degree and Physics and Chemistry with my Abitur, which sucks since the language of instruction would be german for 2 sciences.

I May just end up with only the IB, since the headmaster said I MIGHT not be able to take the abitur.

But he also said, again, I MIGHT be able to take some courses(AP classes?) at the end of the 2 years and do some tests in Chemistry and Physics(after autodidactically learning them).

Would that count as if I had them all in my IB curriculum?

I hope you got all this promiscuous information.

Do not stress. MIT has a recommended high school curriculuum that is based on the US Educational system. That being said, MIT gets applications from all over the world, and it fully expects variation.

For example, a science-oriented student doing A-levels in the UK, or Nigeria, or Hong Kong, would likely be doing Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry in their last two years of high school. No HASS subjects whatsover, and likely no biology. A student doing their abitur in Germany or Finland or Estonia will almost certainly not have three sciences. This is particularly true with a Finnish abitur, where it is likely that a student will only have one.

Every students application is evaluated in context. How did they do, given the system that they were in. For example, we sometimes see asked on this board “How many AP classes/exams do I need to get in?” That depends entirely. There are some schools where only three AP courses are offered, and a student who has taken all of those three has done as well as they could. There are other schools that offer 30 AP classes, and a student who graduates from one of these schools with only three AP classes is not showing that they match well for MIT. Every student’s achievements are evaluated in context.

This definitely holds true for the abitur or for that matter, the IB. Do not worry about this.

I like science so I do not think it is real “stress” to me.
But more science subjects would be recommended, that is what I would think from my standpoint at the moment.

Schools with 30 AP classes?

It would be nice if you could explain it to my, preferably with examples, because I can not really relate to anything like that.

Thank you in advance!
