Hey, welcome back davidrune. Sorry for crashing your thread this early, but I guess it's kind of on topic: What exactly is the IB program / diploma? Is it like a set of AP classes or something?

It's completely different from AP. The IB "philosophy" is to give you a well-rounded education, while allowing you to focus in certain fields. Therefore you have to take six courses that must be spread out among five fields. Kind of like the distributional requriements at Yale. The fields are:
Math, Science, First Language, Second Language, Social Science...

Three of the courses must be at an advanced level. Therefore they are equivalent to AP courses, and three of the courses are at a standard level. The courses are not as exam oriented as AP... you have to complete assignments that must be externally graded. For example, if you take a higher level science, you have to complete 60 hrs of labs which will be graded . If you take a higher level english, you must write two comparative essays comparing literature from different cultures.

Anyways, after you do that. You have to write an extended essay. This is sort of like a "thesis". Minimum of 4000 words, in any subject you want. And then you have to complete 150 hours of creativity, action, and service.

And finally, you have to take a "philosophy" course called theory of knowledge.

So that's the IB in brief.

i am, but you already knew that.

Yea, wierd, I was just looking at the first posts in the Princeton ED discussion... and it's pretty much us discussing the IB.

Did you finally finish ur EE?

yep, i finished it. i still haven't finished my TOK paper....i'm really not that concerned with the IB...mainly because the results are immaterial as long as i get into college.

yea... I'm getting started on the TOK paper, after Christmas. Although an outline was due a while ago... which question did u choose?

I'm doing the one on ethics, I think it's question number 9 on the list. Wait... your school doesn't give out predicted grades right?

That paper reminds me of one I did in junior year....it took forever. (Mine came to 8,200 words, though.)

which paper? The TOK paper or EE? The IB has strict word limits. The TOK has to be between 1200 to 1600. And EE has to be less than 4000 minus appendices.

My first draft of my EE was done last Sunday. 3850 words on "To what extent does the Americans with Disabilities Act promote greater social integration and acceptance of people with disabilities?" Final due on Tuesday.

And we did TOK essays last year, second semester. I picked the one about Truth and decay of Untruth.

Oh, one of my friends is doing that. That one looks so damn confusing. What examples did you use?

I did my EE in Chemistry.

yeah i'm a diploma candidate
EE: German

what r ur predictd scores? I'm trying to get a guage of what is good for ivies.

I'm a diploma candidate, though I'm not sure if I'm going to apply to Yale or not...

david, i actually got my predicted score...minus the EE/TOK points.
it's a 40...

however, i get a second set of predicted scores after my practice exams in february.

I'm also a Diploma candidate. Nice to know other IB'ers...

Wow... that's really good. I'm predicted at a 41... but after my exams... that I'm writing right now, it could swing either way. But I won't drop below a 40. At least I hope so.

yey! i finished EE and TOK! :) and all courseworks!! i just have french oral and exams left

finished EE, need to do TOK, english and french orals, and exams

my school makes all of us take all classes at the HL level, then we decide which to take SL, but for a school grade STILL have to take everything HL. It's overly stressful...but not a waste because knowledge is knowledge

holy moly.. kinda like the AS and A levels..

we just do 3 standards and 3 highers..
that's stressful enough.. dont think 6 highers would fit in a UWC time table.. it would be impossible
