IB Transfer Colleges & EC's

hi,

i'm currently a student attending Mt. San Antonio Community College looking to transfer to a top tier business school. My goal is to be able to transfer to UCB Haas, or NYU Stern... I was wondering what other colleges in that tier are worth applying to which I may have a decent shot at getting into so that i can increase my chances for getting into this field.

As of now, i've only been at Mt. Sac for one semester and currently have a GPA of 3.71 which i plan to raise to 3.9 by fall of 2011 before i submit my applications for these schools.

What i'm really confused about is what to do for EC's to get into these schools. I have begun to volunteer for the American Red cross. When the spring semester starts i plan to join a photography club, MSA, and business club. I will try to work my way to a leadership or exec role in one of these clubs, but i feel it will be hard to do that before fall when i intend to apply. I'm also trying to find some kind of part time job. Will this cut it for a school like haas?

On a side not, i know as freshmans, banks don't offer financial analyst internships in investment banking.. this would be something i would do during my junior year as an EC in my transfer school right? just double checking. thanks!

Well an internship isn’t an EC, it is work experience - ECs are club involvement, volunteering, and so forth. Additionally, IB internships are available for sophs, but usually with boutiques, sometimes unpaid, and with some networking and usually with a good school on your resume.

In terms of school, Haas and UCLA and solid (Haas is better), NYU, Darden, Duke, Emory, Kellogg, Chicago, Georgetown, Chapel Hill (regional) and depending on how competitive you want to go, Cornell, Columbia, MIT, and so forth.

IBanker

Your best bet is to apply into the weaker departments of the better schools. Your chances for gaining admission are much better in programs like Anthropology. Once there, figure out a way to transfer into a more relevant programs like Accounting or Econ. If nothing else, at least get a minor in Econ or Accounting or whatever.

Coming from a relatively unknown community college with less than 4.0 GPA, your odds are slim of getting into a good program at a top-name school. So again, apply into a weaker program where they need the students.

If you want to do I-banking, the name of your school is hands-down the most important thing. Secondly, is your ability to interview. Finally, your ability to network. Once your in a top-name school, your EC’s will be irrelevant.
