My school is launching it’s very FIRST year as an IB school next year. So, as a current sophomore who is registering for next year’s classes, I am in a predicament whether to remain in IB or take 5 or 6 AP classes next year. (Our AP program is well developed and we are only losing AP physics 1 as a result of IB) Many of my peers have been persuaded by a couple presentations the IB coordinator at our school has given, only bringing out the positives of the program. I, on the other hand, see some issues he is not bringing up. It will be the first year, so I strongly question the quality of the IB education and whether the teachers will know what they are doing, and how they will prepare us for the final IB exams. I feel confident going into AP next year, although as one of the top students, the IB coordinator told me it won’t look as good if I take AP (I believe he isn’t telling the whole truth). I need some advice from the College Confidential family. Thank you for all responses!
Honestly, you can go into either one, it doesn’t matter which one.
As a whole, the IB program is very rigorous, and has an extensive amount of coursework, so you’ll be doing more amount of work than your AP counterparts. My friends in the IB Diploma program (I’m a CIE A level student, plus I’m taking one AP[international student as well]), have actually enjoyed being there. Generally, I would recommend the IB over AP, but since it will be your school’s first year, I don’t think it would be the best decision.
So, I would recommend going ahead the AP classes. However, if you are seriously considering the IB program, then you can choose that too, but you would have to take the risk, or as I like to call it, being the guinea pig, since it’s your school’s first year.
Hope I’ve helped in some way. You can’t go wrong either way.
