iBanking in California

Hey, I had a few questions about finding an internship at an Ibank in California. I transferred from Los Angeles Pierce College to USC last spring and just finished my first semester. I did not get an internship this summer; However, I would like to apply for next summer. My GPA for my first semester at USC Marshall under Business Administration was a 3.77 and I have 3 semesters left (will be graduating after fall 2012).

What California ibank branches should I apply to?

What is the recruitment process like? (interviews, exams, etc...)

Do most of these firms offer you a position after your internship?

bumpppppppp

Apply to as many as you can, it’s tough to make the cut so I would try to cast a wide net.

Recruiting will be essentially the same as it is for NY offices, read M&I for more info.

If they like you and you perform, yes.

Ibanking choices on the west coast is very sparse. Unless you want to work the retail side.

Pimco is a very big bond firm in Newport Beach

Morgan Stanley has an office in LA iirc

There are also a ton of Boutiques that deal with bonds and MA and middle investment in LA/OC as well.

Recruitment is about the same submit then apply. The best thing you can do is find a firm to intern at and get sponsored for a series 7 license. That way you have a leg up on almost all out of college applicants

3.Smaller firm has a higher chance to hire especially if you come off as bright energetic and brillant. Other than that larger firms go through the same process and if your supervisor like you they might sponsor you for hire.

My advice to getting hired. Get to know your supervisor and worker when they have time. The quality of your work has to be good, but the most important thing you can do is be memorable as cliche as that sounds.

^Los Angeles and San Francisco are the #3 and #4 investment banking cities in America behind New York City and Chicago. I’m a Los Angeles native and I could confidently say there are over 150+ investment banks in the Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and San Fernando Valley.

I thought Charlotte was #2? Or maybe that wa banking in general

I’ve never fully researched which cities are the top for investment banking, but industry professionals that I’ve spoken with and articles/forums that I’ve viewed online indicate the top 4 cities for investment banking are New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles with Boston, Dallas, and Atlanta being up there.
