ICs at Inprocessing

when recruited athletes get to inprocessing, do they bring their gear for their specific sport to inprocessing? for example would a hockey player or baseball player bring their huge bags with them and store them somewhere until the end of basic? or do they show up without it and have it shipped over after basic. i’m just curious as to how this works

i am not positive, as i am not an IC. i would reccomend not bringing it, however, as you must carry everything you bring the first around almost everywhere. i believe most ICs either have their parents ship it out, or their parents bring it themselves during parents weekend. do bring modeled cleats though, everyone if you ahve them. they come in handy (intramurals for non ICs)

Hey eagle36, how about a list of everything we should bring! yes? maybe? please....?

I got a list of everything in my candidate packet. Its about a page long, and mostly different types of documents, such as proof of citizenship and stuff that can depend on each person's situation. It says dental records, but I just got a more recent letter saying that they will do dental records at inprocessing. It also includes boots if you brought them, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but a razor for guys.

"they will do dental records at inprocessing." That seems strange. Are you sure that they don't need dental records this year?? That was kind of a big deal last year in that you were clearly supposed to bring them, not to mention wisdom teeth -- which is a perenial topic of choice for the service academy boards!

This is the kind of thing that should be clarified at orientation -- when you will hear from the dental/medical department!

My D got a letter this weekend that was very clearly, no need for dental xrays - they have gone to some digital thing and thus will do it all on inprocessing. It was pretty clear not to bring them. The big packet that came last week said that they were needed but the letter that came Saturday from the "Commander, 10th Dental Squadron" was very explicit, don't bring dental x-rays. They don't even want x-rays if your dentist is also digital because of system compatibility issues. They did, however, make it clear they expect you to come with your dental work all done. Oh, and the letter also said they do recommend getting rid of the wisdom teeth, "Interestingly, wisdom teeth are the leading cause of lsot academic time and delays in pilot qualification for cadets. I highly encourage you to visit your family denist for a thorough dental examination, paying particular attention to the above-mentioned concerns. Correction of all dental defects and removal of wisdom teeth, when indicated, before arriving at the Academy will maximize your dental readiness, minimize lost academic time and go a long way towards ensuring your success as an Air Force Cadet."

MomofHopeful2011 - Thanks for the info. I am going today for a consultation on my wisdom teeth, and my mom says it greatly eases her mind to know to proceed with this. That's the true value of these forums! :~))

dc408,
Concerning IC gear...the mom of a 2010 IC fencer told me he took his stuff at inprocessing and stored it with the coach. I was not under the impression that he carried it around all day; rather, it was the first thing they did when they got there. I suspect we will call the coach prior to I-day (or see him at orientation) and find out what our son should do.

Ok Falcons 11 but I want credit for mentioning wisdom teeth in post #5! ;) Seriously, that's good info Momofhopeful2011 (will you be changing your name to Momofappointee2011 now!?). we went back and forth on this one last year because my son had absolutely no sign of impacted teeth. However, we got the same advice at orientation as you got in the letter and decided to do it. He's thrilled that it's out of the way -- one less thing to worry about!

AFDAD2010 - how do I change my name? I want to change but have not figured out how!!

It says in the FAQ's for CC that you cannot change your forum name, unless you contact the forum Administrator and have a very good reason. It would have been cool if you could though. :~))

Oh well - I guess that is a lesson to all you young'uns - pick a name that works even after you/your child gets accepted!!! ha ha.

We had quite a different experience concerning wisdom teeth. The dentist at our orientation was asked about it and she said that she couldn't feature any candidate getting their wisdom teeth out unless there was a good reason for it. We didn't even bother to get x-rays, and it was no inconvenience for our son. He may yet have his out, if he goes the pilot route, but it will be at the Air Force's expense. Just another chapter in the same old story - everything's different for everybody, but somehow it all just seems to work out.

Moral of the story - wait to see what arrives in your mailbox! We all seem to have minor variations on a theme througout this process. So, whatever they want from you - give them!

Same here, my dentist said that my wisdom teeth were coming in fine. The reason they probably want them out is that they have probably had problems in the past with people who should have got them pulled and waited. Just an idea.

thanks Darla. i was not sure, as i am not an IC.

As for the list, bring a razor. other than that, you can access your bags after basic if you want a certain shampoo or toothepaste or what not, but the C-store has stuff too, and probably has what you want. i wouldn't bring more than a backpack with little in it. i had a change of clothes from B&B and basic toiletries b/c of staying the night.

Yeah, they told us at Summer Seminar pretty much the same thing: if you don't need it, don't bring it.

eagle36 - BTW, when did you live in NC? Were you at Fort Brag? Let's just say banking is pretty big where I live.

Momofhopeful2011 -- your name is just fine - it's just now you are hopeful that he will make it through Basic, then Recognition, then graduation! You're good to go for four years!

AFDAD2010 - yeah, I guess you are right. Well, at least partially - She'll put up a fight if I tell her that I am "hopeful" for Him!!! (ha ha)
