I'd be really grateful if you could calculate my chances :)

I know my test scores are seriously lacking/non-existent, lol. I am planning on taking the SAT this fall along with the Math II, US History, Biology subject tests.

Also, if you have some good college matches for me, I'd like to hear them!

Could you calculate your UW and W GPA’s please? That would help a lot. Oh and your UC GPA.
Your ecs look great, but your sat ii’s and ap’s aren’t too hot. I’d focus more on your test score as of now and try to get your sat ii’s much higher. Since you are interesting in more math-y majors, make sure your Math ii score is really high (its really not that hard to get an 800- its easier than SAT I math)

Thanks for replying ngstar!

For gpa, this is just what my counselor told me: UW - 3.9, W - 4.3. How do I calculate my UC GPA?

I don’t know what happened on the APs…I guess I got really nervous and froze. My first ap was spanish and I nearly had a panic attack during the test, lol. I understand the math part…I feel so stupid for not planning ahead. Now, I have to squeeze everything in and hope I don’t mess up my last few chances at the SAT I/II.

I second that. Please calculate your UW and W so we can help you :)

might wnat to aim for a 2200+ for those schools.

Hi lolilaughed, could you tell me how to figure the UW and W? My counselor just told me these UW - 3.9, W - 4.3, but I don’t know if they are the right thing.

Without official SAT or ACT numbers it is very difficult to provide a useful assessment. To study CompSci you are going to need a very strong math SAT. Otherwise, speaking in the most general of terms:

Columbia and Stanford have extremely low admit rates (<=10%), this makes them a reach for anybody. A projected SAT of 2000 - 2100 won’t help.

I assume you are a California resident, assuming a 2100/3.9, I’d say Cal is probable and UCLA is likely. USC and NYU are probably yes. Harvey Mudd, being science math oriented will want to see some exceptional math SATs, (760+).

Come back when you have actual SAT numbers, that will be a big help.

Thank vinceh, I know its hard to say without some actual scores, but I am starting my applications and I wanted an idea of whether my chances were good or not. Oh, I am a California resident :)

Are my ECs good enough for these schools? Also, I am first generation to go to college and my family income is ~40k if that makes a difference.

Your gpa’s are really good. For the UC’s there are some classes they do count and some they don’t. It depends on your school and what classes are a-g. You should probably check out your school or district website and they should have it somewhere. And since you’re a CA resident, for the UC’s they’ll look at which school (like my school is notorious for the hard classes) and take that into account. First generation is great (apparently privates really like it)! Its something to be really proud of. Just work on your sats and aim high (2200+). You have the ec’s, hard class load, good grades.

I’d say stanford and columbia are reaches (they are for everyone)
Cal and UCLA are likely- though LA has been really weird about admissions lately
NYU and USC are probably in
Harvey Mudd- If you have great math scores, you’re in

If you’re interested in comp sci, how about U of Illinois- Urbana Champaign or University of Michigan- Ann Arbor or even U of Washington-Seattle. They’re pretty good schools and I know my dad (from a comp sci company) used to go there to recruit some really smart people. He said his company preferred to go there rather than Stanford for whatever reason. If you want to work right after, they might be better because growing startups like recruiting there.

Probably UC. No chance at stanford

Thanks for replying again ngstar! Your words are very encouraging  . The suggestions on colleges you made are great; I will definitely look into them!

Hi asian75, thanks for chancing me!

Columbia is my dream school…I would die of joy if I got in. Would applying ED help my chances, or am I just wasting time with Columbia?

Columbia is a reach, but doable. Their acceptance rate is pretty high.

Yay! There’s hope…do you guys think I should apply ED? What is the minimum my scores should be on SAT, ACT, Math II, Bio, and US History?

for MathII, try 760+. I got an 800.
for ACT, try 33+ (lol although I got a 32)
I think Stanford is a bit too hard for you, but I think your still a very strong candidate for all the other schools.

plz chance me back, Im also thinking of comp sci and accounting lol, and our GPAs are quite similar lol. thx

uhhhhhmmmm
for Harvey Mudd
the SAT IIs are not good enough
I heard they need 2+ SAT IIs in sciences and each 750+

chance me back ~

Bump…would I have a chance at Brown?

I’d say that the imperative thing right now is to get those SAT scores up, especially since your AP scores are only good, not stellar. So, for Stanford, Mudd, Columbia and Brown are reaches (big reaches if you can’t get those scores up). USC, Cal, UCLA and NYU will also be difficult, but not to nearly the same degree. Your chances will improve greatly, once again, if you can raise your SAT scores. Based on the fact that you’re in the top 10% of your class, I’m guessing that you’re ELC, in which case you might want to add a couple of lower tier UCs for some solid safeties.
