Ideal company - how to get foot in the door

My son has identified a company for which he is extremely interested in working. His first level of interest would be a summer internship (2014). They are currently recruiting interns for Fall, 2013 so it will be awhile before they begin looking for summer interns.

Is there anything he can do between now and then to express his interest in working for them next summer (without being annoying or looking desperate)? Or should he just wait until they begin their recruitment for summer interns?

Find a way to network. What kind of industry is it? Do they host events or conferences that he could attend? Does he know anyone at that company, or know someone who could introduce him to someone at that company?

In addition, anything he can do to improve his application will be beneficial. He should spend his time researching the company and the department he is interested in. Maybe see if he can get in touch with anyone who was an intern there previously to gain more insider information on what they look for and expect.

networking. get a linkedin profile and connect with as much as professionals as you can that work for the same company he is aiming at.

completely agree on LinkedIn. Also, the best thing that he can do is to try to get to personally know someone at that company. send some casual emails to some of the managers, etc., and go from there.

just applying randomly is a very low-success proposition.
