Hi guys so basically I’m a senior in high school but i have no idea what science major to take that can be useful in case i don’t decide to go to medical school. I heard biology is really good for undecided people but doesn’t have many future job prospects. Im mainly aiming for UC’s and USC. Are there any good majors that i can take up science related? I love anatomy, chemistry, and biology.
College is about learning what you love and finding a job out of it…
Biology - science teacher, dentist, veterinarian, pharmacy assistant, bioethicist, dietician, epidemiologist, zookeeper, marine biologist, forest ranger, botanist, environmental scientist, et cetera
Chemistry - teacher, research scientist, chemical engineer, pharmacist, environmental consultancy, etc.
Physics - teacher, physicist, engineer
Actually, biology is terrible for undecided people, because it leads to few careers (it’s one of the majors with the lowest ROIs).
You can go to med school with any major - Russian Literature, Music, American Studies, Economics…
Check out impacted majors and compare yourself to these.
CSU’s will lock you into a major, but UCs typically only need to know what college you’d be applying for.
If you can, go to a school where you don’t have to declare. Take a year to explore.
I heard going as undeclared can have a negative impact on your admissions. Not too sure about that though.
Nursing & computer science are the only really good ones I can think of.
Environmental science is the strongest area (considering prospective growth and openings) within Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Physical Sciences professions (http://www.bls.gov/emp/ep_table_102.htm). It includes Environmental Health Specialist jobs (readily obtainable with a bachelor’s degree in biology or environmental science) and site inspection/mitigation work (readily obtainable with a bachelor’s degree in geology or environmental science).
None of BLS’ Life Sciences professions are good without a graduate degree. (The best of those with a bachelor’s degree only is forestry!)
You should look into biochemistry. It combines both biology and chemistry so you would have a larger amount of jobs open to you as well.
