I am an incoming freshman, and my orientation is coming up in two weeks. I'm having trouble deciding what to take, as I'm sure many other freshmen are too.

How many units/classes should I sign up for?

I am an International Development Studies major and I plan to double up with something that interests me, perhaps Civic Engagement.

Here is what I have so far for my schedule:

Econ 1 with Bresnock (4 units)
Intro to Hindi with Mahajan (5 units)
Georgraphy 4 with Rigby (5 units)

If I'm lucky enough to get all these classes, would adding a fiat lux seminar be too much?

So far I have 14 units, is that too heavy or light of a load for first quarter?

Also any input on the class content and teachers would be helpful. Also any suggestions for what classes I should take.

I'm also debating whether I should take a cluster...I don't really understand the pros/cons.

that load is fine. you can add a fiat lux if you want. as for future classes, i know you shouldn't bother looking at upper-div poli sci since you won't be getting into those anytime soon. unless the school figured out it should let interdepartmental majors bypass the annoying first pass restrictions...

units: recommended is 14-16 for first quarter freshmen. three 5 units classes and a fiat lux should be fine, so long as all of the classes are interesting and not too strenuous.

for clusters, just do a search around CC for them. basic consensus: only do one if you really want to. make sure to pick one that takes care of GEs not covered by your major.

I was just browsing and wanted to tell you that Econ 1 is all full for the fall quarter. I mean completely full. There are a few open Econ 2 classes, but I don't think they'll be open in a couple weeks. I wanted to take an Econ class since i'm a Biz Econ major, but that didn't work out too well...

sounds good, but i wouldn't bet on getting in those classes (except maybe Hindi) by the time your orientation comes up. look around for GEs that interest you and try making schedules on myucla off of those if you want.

by the way, mahajan is an excellent professor...i took a fiat lux with her last year and she is hilarious. apparently she teaches hindi very well and i wish i had time in my schedule to take it. so for sure sign up for that class! :)
