I was wondering if there’s any way NOT to attend a college once you’ve been accepted ED. What if you decide to wait to go to college for a year or two, or decide not to go at all, or go to a community college?

What would be the ramifications of “backing out”?

If you decide to defer enrollment for a year, that’s perfectly legitimate. I don’t know if Amherst would honor a request to defer enrollment for another two years, however. If you think there’s a possibility of backing out, I would not apply ED.

I can’t name specific consequences, other than that if for some reason, you decided to apply again, they would most likely not consider your application. But of course, there is no way for them to force you to attend.
