If accepted to 4 yr but decline and go CC first, can student reapply at a later date

Sort of similar to a question asked below.

My daughter wants to apply to colleges, but she might start at community college. We have not decided. If she is accepted to a 4 yr college and declines can she apply again later? My DH says colleges will look poorly on you if you decline and then reapply later.
I think it is totally different. At that point you would be applying as a transfer student, not a freshman admission.

Logic would dictate that you are correct - there are plenty of kids each year who get accepted to their Big State U 4-year college and elect to stay at home for the first two years for either financial or personal reasons. They then transfer to Big State U two years later with no problem.

Now, that’s not to say you can apply to Elite U and do the same thing two years later, especially if they offered you a big FA package, but in that case I would ask for some sort of deferral and permission to attend a local CC while getting medical treatment or something like that. Might not work, but they can be somewhat flexible in certain circumstances.

Which college/university? Which community college? In this case the answer is “it depends”.

It really is OK for her to have a chat with the admissions office at the 4-year place she is interested in, and find out if it matters to them.

Ask DH how he “knows” this…

We are in Texas and she will probably apply to state schools. DH knows many instructors @ Houston Community College. Says someone told him that. Our school district is having a college fair this week so we will ask colleges directly. Thanks!

Who have nothing to gain by discouraging kids from even applying to 4-year colleges if there is a chance they might attend a CC ;-)

I have no doubt those Houston Community College actually believe this, but that doesn’t make it accurate. As Upton Sinclair once said “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

Please post back what you hear at the college fair.

The person most likely to know about this at Houston CC would be the Transfer Advisor there. That person’s whole job is to help students at the CC through the transfer process.
