If applying ED; how many others should one consider applying to in case of rejection

At the moment, I'm considering two options;

Apply ED to Hamilton

Apply regular decision to:
Hamilton
Skidmore
Colgate
Rochester
Syracuse
Cornell
Vermont
McGill
Washington

However, if I decide to apply ED to Hamilton, I obviously still have to prepare other applications in case I get rejected. At the moment, I think I'll drop off Colgate and Cornell, as if I get rejected by Hamilton, it would be unlikely that either of them would accept me, and prepare applications to Rochester, Skidmore, Syracuse, Vermont, McGill and Washington, just in case I get rejected.

Does that sound like a good idea, or should I just prepare applications for all nine, no matter what I decide to do with Hamilton? Also, for those of you applying ED, or have applied ED, how many additional applications will you/did you prepare?

Which one is your safety

Vermont and Skidmore are safeties for me, as is Washington as I have fairly good connections there.

This is a good question.

I’m planning on filling out the application for my ED school along with several of the other schools I’m interested in. If I get deferred or rejected in Early Decision, I’ll pump out the rest in the week or two period before Regular Decision.
